Much like the game itself, I think it should be up to the creator whether they want to charge or not. They had the idea, they put the work in to make it a reality. It isn't a gamer's right to get access just because they want it.

That said, there's a deeper debate here about whether modders should charge an ongoing subscription fee, which is what's happening here. It does seem a little on the greedier side to expect a monthly fee to access it, but there likely is ongoing development to keep the mod intact as Starfield gets updated.

I think $5 per month is too steep for what it is, though, and the popularity of it, given the fact Nvidia owns 84% of the GPU market, would easily recoup costs if it were a one-time cost or more reasonably priced monthly.

Oh, a follow-up: it's hidden behind a Patreon subscription. You don't need to be an ongoing subscriber, just active for the moment of activation. So, it is a $5 one-time payment. In that case, I think people are being a bit too uppity about it. Sure, it's paying for a setting that Bethesda should've implemented in the first place, but it's one hell of a setting that'll make it much more playable at a higher frame rate.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Modders, like anyone else, deserve be paid for hard work and a great product. And I'm really looking forward to seeing what the modding community can do with Starfield. I think we're going to see some amazing things.

Generally, mods will add tens if not hundreds of hours onto a game, whether it's extra content or (in this case) a quality-of-life upgrade that will prompt you to keep coming back for the base game. Don't get me wrong, I know games are a luxury that's hard to afford in current climates, but people really seem to lack an understanding of value and continually expect more for free in this industry.

If they don't want to pay with money, they should pay with their time in putting together the same mod themselves. I know which currency I value more, so I'll just pay with cash.
