Reviews are here ahead of Assassin's Creed Mirage launching tomorrow. Here are some scores and quotes from selected outlets, in descending order:
TechRadar Gaming 4.5/5 - "Mirage is a brilliant, bloody, patient, focused, and exquisite Assassin’s Creed adventure that’ll live long in the memory - and hopefully represents a solid bedrock on which more lean and focused entries in the series can build."
IGN 8/10 - "Assassin’s Creed Mirage's back-to-basics approach is a successful first step in returning to the stealthy style that launched this series."
Eurogamer 4/5 - "I love, perhaps more than anything, that this game shows you Baghdad at its most powerful, influential, its most culture-creating and knowledge-expanding, and then leaves you to think about that."
GamesRadar+ 4/5 - "Despite its more compact vision, it manages to encapsulate exactly what it means to be an Assassin's Creed game. From the more classic costuming to the focus on stealth and streamlined parkour, this is a beautiful return to the classic games. And oh boy does it look good doing it."
Game Informer 8/10 - "Concerns about the conclusion aside, I still had a wonderful time in Baghdad’s ancient alleys and palaces. Not everything is perfect, but the “less is more” design philosophy goes a long way to making this one of the most consistently engaging titles within the series for some time."
VG247 4/5 - "Mirage represents Ubisoft at its best; fuelling historical intrigue with tight, uncomplicated gameplay systems that make puzzles out of environments, that breadcrumb you to fantastic treasures, that sucker punch you out of your false sense of security whenever you get too comfortable."
PCGamesN 8/10 - "I leave Mirage not only satisfied with my experience but also with a renewed love of a series that once lost me under the weight of its own bloated legacy. Mirage not only successfully transports me to the streets of Baghdad, but also Damascus, Venice, and all the other cities I remember fondly from my memories of earlier installments. It doesn’t break new ground – and it’s impossible to overlook how it suffers from congenital issues with core mechanics and geriatric systems – but given the desperate attempts at innovation and terminal feature creep that’s dogged the series in recent years, it’s refreshing to see Ubisoft Bordeaux trim that fat to prove why Assassin’s Creed has stood the test of time. Mirage is not only a solid entry in its own right, but it stands as a commemorative homage to the series as a whole."
PC Gamer 77/100 - "Mirage gets so close to great that it's annoying, but also encouraging. It may not be the complete return to form that I imagined, but it's the best stealth game to ever have the Assassin's Creed name on it, and I hope Ubisoft sees this new "classic" branch of AC as something to build on."
Eights almost entirely across the board! As expected, really - the step back to its roots was never going to wholly resonate with those who loved the hundreds of hours in Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, but it sounds like the stealth has been absolutely nailed this time, with only the combat letting it down a little. Mixed results on the story too - some say it's great, some the opposite - but at only 15-20 hours long, it's nowhere near as much of an investment as the series has been in recent years.
