Frequent commentator Paul Tassi seems to think so. Most Destiny players will probably know the context to this: the laying off of around 100 staff at Bungie, or 8% of the studio including legendary composer Michael Salvatori, after it missed revenue projections by 45%. This follows February's poorly received Lightfall expansion, which drove players into the arms of the many other fantastic games released this year.
A delay to The Final Shape, the game’s next expansion and the last currently scheduled, has been widely reported as Bungie aims to make it the best ever in a bid to restore confidence.
We know The Final Shape will close the current ten-year saga of Destiny 1 and 2, and that Bungie has announced a shake-up of its current seasonal story model for the following year, but beyond that, no one knows what’s next for Destiny, other than that it’ll apparently go on.
Even before the current crisis I personally thought a Destiny 3 would make sense at this point. As Tassi says a sequel and hard reset risks dropoff, but so does the conclusion of the current saga. It's an inflection point and an excuse to quit whatever happens. Launching a new saga alongside an all-new game, with an ambitious refresh of game features, technical systems, and player onboarding, feels like it’d be more successful than doing so within Destiny 2, especially if Bungie gives us a way to carry across some of our characters' legacy, as it did from Destiny 1.
