I have a shameful secret...I've never played a single Final Fantasy game! 🫨

My partner is a fan and I sometimes watch along, but I was absolutely hooked on Pokémon when VII came out.

I've considered playing through all of the mainline titles (so no MMOs just yet!) in order, but that feels like a huge commitment!

Do you think it's best to start with VII as it's one of the most beloved, or would starting from the first one give an appreciation of how they evolve?

The first few games might be very old-looking and not impressing at all played as first thing today. If you want a classic experience, I would pick one from FF6 and onwards, those are still great even by today's standards.

But probably for someone completely new to the franchise I would recommend playing one of the modern titles first, FF7 Remake or FFXV if you want the traditional turn-based experience or FFXVI if you prefer action mode. And then if you already have some connection to the characters and are familiar with the gameplay a little, you can commit to the Pixel Remaster of the old games and keep on playing through the classics.

This is how I got to watch all Star Trek. The first I've seen was the new movie from JJ Abrams and it got me interested enough that I could sit through all series and movies in chronological order. I'm not sure I would be a Trekkie now if I started with the first episode of TOS or the very first movie 😂

Edit: I have to add you are not alone, my partner only played FFXIV when I dragged him into it. He was going to buy FFVII when it originally came out but he was thinking he haven't played the first 6 so what's the point? So now he's just sitting next to me on the sofa when I play through the single player games :D

very cool! I feel this should be a public holiday in the uk 👌

Where do we put in a petition for that? Give me extra bank holiday which I can use when an FF game gets released 😂

FF8 was my first, then I played 9 and loved that too, so I went back to 7 then. I think this is the reason I have more sentimental attachment to 8 and am quick to defend it whenever anyone says it's the weakest of the classic PS1 trilogy. I also think sentiment has a lot to do with the passion that exists for 7, because for many people it was their first, and 8 was a bit different.

But I do think this debate is splitting hairs. What matters is that all three of the PS1 Final Fantasies are some of the best RPGs ever made, and 6 and 10 are damn good too.

As a run of form it must be up there with the best in industry history. Can you name another dev that's ever put out five 9/10 or 10/10 games in a row? I would say FromSoft, and maybe Nintendo, but then I'm drawing a blank. Edit: Oh, and Valve and Rockstar, but does it really count when you take an average of like ten years between releases?

I haven't got into the 7 remake trilogy yet but I intend to at some point - looking forward to it!

I absolutely love FF8 so would be there with you to defend it! Squall is still one of my favourite heroes.

And I agree on the sentiment part, I would be torn if you asked me which FF game is my favourite because it really depends on 'at what time of my life' are you asking.
