DON'T DIG DOWWWN!!!! (or do if you are a crazy cat like me :P)

Ford James's avatar

Hah, a classic. It's worth the clarification that the suggestion is to not dig directly down beneath your feet though - digging down to make a staircase isn't a problem as you're less likely to fall into lava or a ravine!

I'm going to be watching this bounty closely as someone who has yet to ever play Minecraft 😬 much to the horror of some of the JA team!

please please please dont! its a one way ticket and there are no such thing as ex-minecraft players

When you first spawn in the world of Minecraft, look for exposed grey blocks with black dots - that's coal. Having coal from the start will make your first night much easier! Instead of wandering too far, simply scan the nearby terrain for any exposed areas where coal might be visible.

If you live in a wooden house, never enter it with a lava bucket on your hot bars! I cant count how many time me or my friends had incidents with lava, as a result burning whole structure to the ground :D

First Spawn.. Make a underground home.. keep digging and digging but don't too deep.. make it just enough if you do not have the creativity making a new house with wooden block.. just start with dirt to survive

  1. don’t try to rush through the game, take your time and explore!

  2. When I spawn, I always just run a little while to see if I can find a village. Villages are a great source for getting hay bales to make bread for early game food.

  3. Always carry a water bucket.

  4. Never carry a flint and steel in your home.

  5. Always carry torches.

  6. Animal farms are a better source of food than crop farms

  7. Make sure to always break your boat after using it to keep bringing it with you. You never know when an ocean will show up.

  8. if you’re new, after hitting a creeper once, run away then repeat the process.

Watch out for random holes in the ground, you could be dropping to the bottom of the world.

Here’s a few tips I’ve came up with!

  1. Don't dig straight down beneath your feet, create a staircase you can easily move up and down between.

  2. Always carry torches on you everywhere you go, especially during mining.

  3. Always make sure to carry a selection of tools, pickaxe, sword, and an axe.

  4. Utilise wildlife and animals for materials.

  5. If nearby, use a village for housing, farming, trading, and materials.

  6. Look to create iron toolsets and amour as soon as you can.

  7. Create a farm at your house for easy and sustainable food supplies.

Here are some lesser known underrated tips:

Increasing Llama Carrying Capacity:

Llamas are often overlooked, but they’re fantastic for item transport. If you lack Shulker Boxes, use llamas!

Tip: Click on a llama while holding a chest, and it becomes their inventory space. Stronger llamas have more slots (up to 15), while weaker ones have just three. Breed llamas to increase their strength.

Blocks Break on the Northmost Face:

When you break a block, the breaking pattern on the top face points north. Use this to check your orientation.

Lava Buckets as Fuel:

Lava is an excellent fuel for furnaces. It outlasts wood and coal.

Bonus: Lava is also used to create obsidian. Carry buckets of lava for both purposes.

Clever Use of Water Buckets:

Instant Lava Cooling: If you accidentally fall into lava, place water quickly. It turns lava into obsidian, saving you!

Mob Control:

Use water to push mobs away or create water elevators.

Farming Efficiency: Water can hydrate farmland in a 9x9 area from a single source block.

Underwater Breathing:

Carry a water bucket for emergency underwater breathing.

hope that helps

I've been playing Minecraft since the very early days of alpha and I had no idea about blocks breaking northwards. I'm a huge proponent of using F3 when playing on PC to check direction, but that's super helpful. I did not think this thread would teach me much I didn't already know, but that is genius.

Play with your friends! I find Minecraft is the most fun when you play with your friends, especially those who can help you mine items and defeat monsters. It's such a better group game.

This is a big one - it can be immensely satisfying to have a huge, sprawling solo base in Minecraft, but it can get lonely easily, so playing on a server is often a lot more fun.

Also hey Jupiter, good to see you on JA!

My top tips are thus

  1. 20 Logs

  2. Split into 2x stacks of 10

  3. 10 logs = 44 wood (ish)

  4. Find a hill and dig the dirt out to make a back base

  5. Build out from that

  6. Build craft bench

  7. Build door

  8. Split the remaining 10 logs into 2x stacks of 5

  9. Use 2 planks of wood for sticks

  10. Create wooden pick

  11. Dig down to get 8 cobblestone

  12. Make furnace

  13. Use remaining logs and planks to make torches via the furnace.

You now have a quick, functioning base and a base to survive from that is sheltered.

Whilst everyone has more survival-oriented tips, I wanted to provide some advice for long-term enjoyment.

  • Set yourself a clear goal you want for your world.

  • You can only experience being new at Minecraft once, so savour it, and avoid spoilers.

  • Only look up tutorials if really necessary.

  • Sharing your builds with others is a great way to make it feel rewarding.

I think with Minecraft there is a lot to do but little direction. Playing it without a reference guide on how to make an axe, sword, smelter, or crafting table, it can be get very intimidating.

Therefore I say explore the world, build your first house with dirt rather than stone, have fun killing zombies and creepers before getting too bogged down with finding certain ore.

Playing Co-Op is also really important as well. Playing with buddies and figuring it out together is always a blast (and this applies to any game too!)

Lastly if you get bored of your world, play on extreme mode. It's not an option but rather a game play style: play as normal but when you die you delete your world and have to start again. It makes every encounter so much more intense and often had me fleeing in a boat until day break before I sail to another part of land and start again

I would say to make sure that when you play the game that you play it too have fun and try not to get too perfect with it, it's fine if whatever you are making in the game isn't 100% symmetrical or something looks a little out of line, it's fine to not be perfect. You're there to have fun! not stress out

I would say playing with friends as well, great way to stay connected in your social relationships with people whilst having fun, even a good way to create new ones!
