KOTOR is, to my knowledge, non considered part of the current canon, just as all the old EU games.

So, if you want to talk about the current Canon, the choice is what it is: the two Cal Kestis games (SW Jedi: Fallen Order and SW Jedi: Survivor) and SW: Squadrons. By publishing date, SW Battlefront II would count. I don't think any more game came out since then? The MMO SW: The Old Republic is not considered Canon.

If you talk about the old Canon and the old Expanded Universe, then KOTOR would well be in the pole position.

Oh interesting. So Dark Forces would be “old canon” then? That would be my second place to KOTOR because I just think the story is dope.

A

It's old Canon/Legends. Given that it might conflict with the film Rogue One, I think it will remain old Canon/Legends.

Disney recognized that the old stuff has quite the appeal, so they had been reprinting/remastering stuff from the old Canon out of money.

Horror and Cats's avatar

Yeah right after I typed it I was like "oh wait, Rogue One totally negates Dark Forces."

Lanah Tyra's avatar

I was going to say Dark Forces, especially if you count in the whole series with Mysteries of the Sith where you play as Mara Jade.

And for me only the "old" canon counts a canon :D

Horror and Cats's avatar

I definitely prefer the old as well haha. I haven’t even watched any of the Disney series yet, just the films.

If forced to choose from the new canon games though, I’d go Jedi: Fallen Order. I really liked all the inquisitor stuff. Plus, it’s just an excellent game. Metroidvania vibes actually, MargotCandy

I bought it now that it was on sale. I like some of the new stuff and happy to play or watch it. But if someone would ask me about the storyline after Ep6 I would give them the Thrawn trilogy and the X-wing books :D

And tbf there is stuff in the old canon as well which I don't like but don't get me started on it because I'll be late from work then XD

Horror and Cats's avatar

Haha knew I could count on you for some ardent Star Wars knowledge. Have a good day at work!

Okay so what I don't like in the old canon is New Jedi Order. While there are some good stories and characters in it, but certain people come and go between the light and dark side like if it was a walk in the park. And they have made some questionable character death decisions there (one of them I'll never forgive), which is upsetting especially if you know that the original creator of those characters wasn't even asked about it. Timothy Zahn was building up a very deep story since the first Thrawn books he wrote... but they never let him finish it. Based on the hints and info in the existing books it would have been an epic story uniting the galaxy against a common evil which Thrawn and the Emperor already new about waaaay earlier and the foundation of the Empire was already an attempt to fend against this common foe. New Jedi Order takes some of these ideas, but it's not even scratching the excellence Zahn could have written.

What I do love about the new canon though is the new Thrawn books. Because their story fits perfectly with Thrawn's backstory from the original Thrawn books. So you can read all books about Thrawn and they will be canon even in the old canon storyline.

Didn't get around to watch Ashoka yet, but really looking forward to see how Thrawn's story in that fits in with this all.

Also, where’s the transition point from old to new?

A

The transition point is October 2012 when Disney bought Star Wars & Lucasfilm: so before 2012, old Canon and Expanded Universe, now called Legends, after 2012, current Canon.

Disney hasn't made a "clear table" of what is old Canon/Legends and what is not, which led to blurry/messy distinctions. The films are all Canons.

Horror and Cats's avatar

That makes sense. Man, that makes the Disney buy hurt even more now that I know it marked the death of old-school EU.

A

They choose to start on a blank state to have space to produce content by themselves, which is an economically sound choice but a sad choice for all the amount of content that had been previously produced, ranging from books and comics to videogames and pen and paper role-playing games.

However, there had been some revival under the Legends banner; for example, they reprinted some books and there were rumors of a KOTOR remaster, which, however, might have been caught in studios selling and closing and being reorganized.

Personally, I still collect old EU books and comics if I can find them, because the old EU was closer to me than the new EU is.

I had no problem with the Disney purchase because I was happy to see more SW content.... Until they crossed the old canon out just so they can make their own movies with the original cast appearing. I would have loved to see the Thrawn trilogy as the new movies or since the cast was older by the time they made movies, they could have made a follow-up story.

My idea of a reboot would have been either leaving out the Skywalkers and introduce new characters and events which fit into the established world, or like Star Trek, do an alternate universe.

There are some very good new stuff, Rouge One or some of the tv series they did. But not Episode 7-9, at least not for me.

Horror and Cats's avatar

I liked Rogue One and Solo was fun. But yeah I didn’t realize they had OFFICIALLY said “old canon is non-canon.” That is frankly absurd lol.

There is SO much universe there to work with. They really didn’t have to do that at all.

Lanah Tyra's avatar

Exactly! Just look at fanfictions... People came up with such cool characters, new worlds, new stories... But in the real worl sadly you only make money with SW if you have a Skywalker included. And as we know it's all about money....

Horror and Cats's avatar

it very much is, unfortunately :/

I'd like to say the Rogue Squadron games. Partly because it covers the main skirmishes and dogfights from the movies but then expands a little on the other missions the Rebels undertook as well which can be inconsequential in the grand scheme of the Star Wars Canon.

Horror and Cats's avatar

Plus, they were sick games lol

Makster's avatar

It's a shame Factor 5 closed. I would've liked to see a mechanic where you can drift an X-Wing around in space

Horror and Cats's avatar

Did you ever play Squadrons? It’s was a phenomenal light flight sim. Really made you feel like a badass taking enemies through serious and drifting into position for a shot. I even played it online and I don’t usually play competitive games.

It’s even got a vr version where you can have the benefit of tracking targets around your cockpit with your head.

Makster's avatar

I think I heard bad things about Squadrons so I avoided it. However the VR sounds amazing. I'm still trying to bug my buddy into lending me his PS VR headset just to play it

Horror and Cats's avatar

I thought Squadrons was great. I didn’t pay much attention to the story, but the gameplay had me hooked.

Although no longer cannon I feel KOTOR has the biggest impact. The fact that it leads drirectly on from the mandalorian war, which is a huge and significant event even in the current cannon, is just one aspect to its importantce. No other game delves so far in to how the Jedi and Sith taught and opperated as much as KOTOR wich makes it more of a history text on the foundation of every other game since.

FirestormGamingTeam's avatar

It's like KOTOR, it's as Alex said, for me was the best game, I still play it. I love it. But then in terms of games it's very hard to answer this one. Simply because it's down to personal opinion a lot of the time.
