Atmosphere/scary goes without saying as far as being required for survival horror games. But what mechanic/convention do you think simply MUST be there to count as survival horror?

For me, resources are what define a survival game. Of course, several other things add up to this, but I don't think there's any other answer!
Gotta be honest, I picked up resources because the other ones are not really what define the genre. Limited Inventory could be another thing, but it can be frustrating sometimes.
JHenckes LiquidMorkite without giving it away, there are a few of these I consider necessary and a few others have said that I don’t agree with, but a perfect balance of just enough supplies to get through by the skin of your teeth is definitely one of the ones I think are required
Gotta be the resources. Against Dr Salvador I was using the starter pistol rather than the shotgun because not only was I afraid of the bagged Chainsaw man but also running out of ammo and softlocking myself at a later stage of the game. That is is true survival horror.
A horror in game and an anxiety as a player
WHAT I WISH IN A SURVIVAL HORROR
We know the classic horror ambient a lonely house in the Forrest , a basement , a old mansion , castle etc
I hope diferent ways of “Survival” came like the shooting game SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE that you can cut in pieces the D€ ad enemies body by shooting or SHELLSHOCK that show the Vietnam war in the most surprising violent way
And yes limitate item capacity or resources help to make the experience more oppressive
we need more Survival horrors
Have you played Conscript? It's a top down survival horror set in WWI and there's no zombies/monsters, just the horrors of war. I like it when people get creative with the settings like that, too.
Hi Horror and Cats
I don’t know about Conscript , but with your description sounds very interesting l will look more information about it and when l have the chance l will play it
thanks for the tips 😊👍
For me it's gotta be the thrill and chills of searching/foraging for food and supplies that you direly need to survive while looking over your shoulder not knowing what lurks around the corner to pounce.
I think the MOST important thing is limited supplies, but a very close and connected second is limited inventory. Like, when you find some precious pistol ammo, but can't pick it up because you have a healing item and a chicken key or whatever lol.
I also think puzzles are super important, but there really is no survival horror without resource scarcity.
yup, the RE series has got all the points down. but I personally prefer survival horrors like sons of the forest where you have needs like hunger and environmental dangers to add on top of the horrors that you will need to face. haha
