I'm looking to start a new book or book series so I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations, a brief spoiler free description about what the story is about would be helpful as well.

Brandon Sanderson has plenty of books with interlocking series to pick from, mostly fantasy, as does David and Leah Eddings, a very prolific couple in the fantasy genre.
I think you should give “The Hobbit” a try. It's a book with simple language, a quick read and introduces you to the world of The Lord of the Rings in a really nice way. So I think it's worth it to be able to start reading Tolkien's entire universe
