Brian Jacques' "Redwall" is my favorite book of all time. The series as a whole is great, but the original taught me so many interesting storytelling facets and nuances. But, as a Young Adult novel, it isn't QUITE on the level of an eight year old.
When reading, I would look up the words I didn't understand in the dictionary and put them into context. But that doesn't help when you THINK you know the word you just read in what is ostensibly an idiom.
"A hair's breadth" is the phrase I read. The phrase I understood was "a hair's breath," because hairs are small and they probably can't project an exhalation that far. So a hair's breath would be a very small distance... right?
Were there any phrases or idioms, or even overarching themes that just went right over your head because you were too young when you read it?
