In the past and currently Instagram has helped me grow on other platforms, especially when I was doing regular YouTube videos from September 2016 till like November 2021.

TikTok is an interesting one because I don't actively promote content of mine on IG as most of it is on my main account.

Over the past year I have noticed that TikTok does really well for the first 24 hours and then nothing; Whereas IG does take time but the views and engagement ticks over nicely.

I have created a PokéParanormal TikTok account but won't be actively promoting it just yet as I'm building up my IG one so then I can post on TikTok with daily content.

Regarding the new news, I think we just have to adapt to what they want to do and I've had to that at my old job and for any future job I will do.

I personally think that it can be very tiring but it is what it is.

This is really helpful, thanks!

Am I right in thinking you're using Instagram as a content archive with a long-tail of engagement, then you use that content on TikTok for short term but high levels of engagement?

That sounds like a cool idea! How would you go about encouraging them to follow you on both platforms, or is there a benefit to keeping the two audiences separate?

No worries!

Well the idea is to grow a community on IG first then putting out the evergreen Pokémon and other evergreen Nintendo Switch content over on TikTok.

IG will always be my main platform and it is so much better UI and UX wise for me and yeah TikTok is better for short term stuff.

To encourage people I post on the stories because the people who do like my content do see things first before posting on the main feed.

The audience demographics are different on both platforms but I won't stop people following me on both. I will probably post saying that any event content will stay on IG and also gaming reviews too will stay on IG.

I heard a very interesting one, that when pushing your content to viewers, platforms also look at how much you interact with the platform. So for example it's not enough to just post to Insta and TikTok, you also have to engage some with your feed, like posts or at least scroll for a bit to watch.

This blew my mind as I honestly hate the having to scroll these platforms and look at lots of crap adverts in between the posts I actually want to see on my feed, but I'll set aside some time now to see if it makes any difference.

Totally agree on the TikTok short term though, my videos very rarely get any more views after the initial 24 hrs, while on Insta I seem to get likes on some of my older posts too. Haven't been posting things lately, but I'll try to get back to it with my new content.

Also apparently TikTok prefers stuff posted directly from their app rather than using scheduling tools, which is a pain in the backside, the very idea of scheduling tools would be to make our lives easier when re-using content on other platforms.

That is interesting! I can see why they'd want that though, as creators engaging with their community drives greater and wider engagement on the platform.

Your point about preferring native posting vs 3rd-party scheduling is similar to the spreadable media discussion I shared the other day. It's a weird example of how developers can make their users more committed by making their service less user friendly! Scheduling tools reduce contact with the platform so native uploads are incentivised. This boosts user contact and dependence on the platform, and because they keep delivering value through their core service (entertainment, big audience, revenue streams) users are unlikely to leave.

Oh I missed that one but read it now, definitely an interesting one. I think when I figure out which platforms I want to post more content on, I'll try to engage with them more, see how I can repurpose content to them and use it their native way and test if it works better than via scheduling.

I definitely noticed that since I am more active on X and comment / share other people's stuff, I get more engagement with my own posts. Still not a significant reach of new people, but definitely get more out of it then on the alternatives where I was just posting things but not really engaging with content.

I wonder what a simple workflow would look like for quickly repurposing content to share natively on other platforms? 🤔
Actions in Photoshop are pretty handy and I'm sure more experienced creators could use them (and similar functions) to streamline their process! 😁

Well you might see me popping up on socials a bit more as I'm giving my profiles some much-needed attention! 😆They're not tied to JA so it's not in that official capacity, but it'll be nice to follow a few friendly faces from the community 😊

I've seen the notifications from JA today.

I might be working on that workflow, if I figure out something I'll share it!
