There is a very particular place in Ogata-mura, Japan; it is “The monument of latitude-longitude confluens” and it is the point where the lines of 40 degrees north latitude and 140 degrees east longitude intersect. There they built a monument that can be visited by anyone. It really struck me as something original, fun and interesting.
Then, in those crazy ideas that we come up with sometimes, I thought;
“what if I look for that crossing point on some ED planets?”
Obviously I knew that, as a general rule, what I was going to find would be not very special, not very attractive in itself... but it is that really that point of land in Japan where the monument has been built has nothing out of the ordinary... it is a nice place, surrounded by rice fields, but beyond that particular fact does not stand out for anything else... and I understood that the same thing would happen in the bodies I visited in ED.
Here are some examples of those places I visited; indeed, nothing in particular, it's just 40°N, 140°E:
The process was simple; just head for a random celestial body, descend to an altitude where it was possible to identify latitude and longitude within the ship's HUD, navigate to a point near 40°N, 140°E and, once there, find the exact location and, within the small margin available, land the ship as best I could... terrain permitting. During the process he would take some snapshots of the celestial body, of the descent, and already of the point 40°N, 140°E in particular.
For me to perform this in the game was something special; first because I had tremendous fun with the idea and carrying it out, and second because I marveled that something so simple, but at the same time so particular, could really put it into practice, because ED offers us a complete universe for us, to explore it with freedom, that freedom that the game boasts from its first day with the premise of “play as you want no one to set your pace”.
And that's what we can continue to do; let's enjoy the game, everything it has, everything that will come, what we like the most and those things we have never done yet. Let's keep enjoying 10 more years of ED.
