Super open minded. Like some stuff i have watched over 50 Times...

Could be funny to watch stuff backwards xD

There was a Screenshot of all Marvel Movies sorted in both ways.

Haha I was specifically thinking of Star Wars with this one and being like “I couldn’t POSSIBLY watch chronological”

Konquest's avatar

Haha..Same here I tried watching 1,2,3 then 4,5,6. It just felt way too weird, Never again!

It has to be release date order.

I'd be hard pressed to think that creators really thought about making prequels after their initial venture and making it fit artistically.

In my younger days I'd wait til a series had finished and then play through chronologically: Metal Gear Solid, Life is Strange, Deus Ex etc. but in the end the juxaposition in mechanics vary wildly game to game and the foreshadowing is more so subtle easter egg nudges to the original. I think going forwards release order is the way to go. I'd never show someone the prequels for Star Wars before the original trilogy, nor The Hobbit before LOTR.

as it was designed by the original author.

Sometimes filmmakers take a book and make a movie, as it succeeds they decide to take a sequel. Not always it's a same order as writer designed

Definitely release order. To me, that's the order the series was intended to be viewed in and so that's the order it should be viewed in. If you were to watch Twin Peaks in chronological order, you would know who the killer is before the show even starts, and you'd be watching an episode from the third season before everything else!

Fire Walk With Me needs to be seen AFTER Twin Peaks Season 2.

I think it depends on the series.

As Thomas mentioned, some shows will be totally ruined by watching chronologically.

In other cases watching chronologically let the creator to expand on small details or characters, giving them more context and weight in the rest of the show.

Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad are excellent shows. Seeing Saul's backstory in Better Call Saul and his history with the Salamanca family make his little comments in Breaking Bad far more important and terrifying.

Love Better Call Saul. They do a really good job not assuming the gravitas BB characters will have when put on screen, giving them ample development, so I could see someone having a fine time watching BCS before BB.

I think it's fairly simple.

The first time around, you always watch it the way it was released. Which is the way most people will have experienced it the first time around, the way all sorts of callbacks and Easter eggs eventually came about. Everything you'll see will have influenced whatever came after exactly because it was created in this order.

When you're rewatching, I think you can just go nuts and do whatever!

Definitely release date... however with the silence of the lambs book series I read them chronologically and that worked out pretty well!

I just think also prequels for example often have a story purpose in them being prequels if that makes sense? They often use the fact that the audience know what is going to happen in the future to enrich the story. Pearl as a prequel to X works well for this ->

Horror and Cats's avatar

Pearl is a great example! Have you seen the trailer for MaXXXine?

Stella's avatar

yes!!! i'm so excited for it - i think Mia Goth is such a good actress ^-^
