This is a great post. I'm not very good at this, so I don't have too much to add, but I'm very intrigued by what people have to say. I was torn between 'external motivation' and 'routine commitment'.

I'm a big believer in positive habit building; if I can do a little something every day until it becomes routine, then I don't have to have a prolonged argument with myself to go and do that thing. In the end though, I voted for external motivation because friends telling me 'just do it!' tends to be what gets me out of the door for more meaningful exertion.

I think none of us are good enough at this, at least not 24/7! =)

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Building positive habits definitely helps turn challenging tasks into more manageable routines. Yet, as you mentioned, sometimes the nudge from friends – that external motivation – is the real game-changer in getting us out the door for more significant steps.

Do you find that activities initially driven by external motivation eventually weave into your routine, or do they always require that extra push from friends?

They can do, but only if I enjoy them enough. I think a good example of that for me is bouldering. It took my friends dragging me out of the house for me to try it for the first time. I found I really loved it, and now it's more often me trying to convince them to go. I go once every couple of weeks if I can convince someone to join me. I'd really like to turn that into a weekly routine, but that realistically means going alone, and I haven't managed to find the motivation to do that yet. That's something I'd really like to achieve in the next few months and one of the reasons your post grabbed my attention!

For me, it's self-motivation, I set myself goals on certain subjects, move on to it, and push hard. Content creation is a marathon, not a sprint, so always plan for the long game.
