I've recently given up any hope of ever finishing a lot of games I've started (or bought on steam and never played). Started watching cinematics only run throughs on Youtube of the more story heavy stuff so I can still experience them, just without the game part...

This isn't the sort of game I like playing but 400 hours would put me right off. Even a game I really enjoyed playing, I can't imagine I would want to put 400 hours in to find everything.

I agree, it just sucks, because when I had more free time, a multi-hour session in an immersive open-world (or strategy) game was my favourite way to play. These days though I'm not sure there's any game so appealing that 400 hours would feel enticing!

I think these super long games aren’t really aimed at people who play at lot of games. It seems like they’re probably aimed at the kind of person who doesn’t have/make a lot of time for playing games, and by extent doesn’t have the time or energy to adjust to an entirely new game every few months. Something someone can turn on and play for an hour to decompress, and then forget about later. I imagine something that takes 400+ hours to complete is appealing for someone in that kind of scenario.

Granted, I have no idea how many people are in that position. Most my input about games is from people who play or make games, which probably skews what my idea of the average consumer is.

I quite like when a game has a lot to do but doesn't force you to do the majority of it. I think in theory it should mean that you experience with the game is unique and everyone will have their own experience with it.
