That's terrible news! It's always heartening to see how the game dev community pulls together at times like this, but 800 jobs is such a huge loss.

So many studio closures and layoffs this year :(

I saw posts on Linkedin, recruiters and hiring managers reaching out to people affected, advertising jobs and even offering relocation support. That means so much to those poor people who are now sitting at home thinking why were they not good enough. Really shows what an amazing supportive community the game industry is.

Considering the news with Unity recently (and the subsequent backtracking) it felt like Epic was bulletproof, but this is going to take some of that shine off.

At least Bandcamp and SuperAwesome are still going to exist after being sold off, and it sounds like their relationship with Epic will carry on.

In fact, the SuperAwesome news is, well, awesome! They gain independence, the existing management stay in place (so hopefully staffing, culture, and operations continue as before), and Epic are investing.

This is so sad to see. I've got so many friends that work in the industry and it's worrying to think that they could potentially be laid off in swathes at the whim of some higher up due to being bought-out or profitability being too low.

My Linked-in is inundated currently with people who had 'secure' jobs at the turn of the year who have been left high and dry by either badly written company policies or hastily drawn up acquisition agreements that offer no protection to existing staff... Hopefully something changes soon to prevent these things but it's a dark time for the industry as a whole.

wow, this is pretty wild, you would think Epic would be just printing money from Fortnite in particular, however as I've seen a lot of players get bored with the BR gameplay loop they are jumping into creative mode which isn't really monetized in the same way so I wonder if this is cannibalizing there profits a bit? Be interesting to see if there is a future focus to heavily monetize the other game modes soon!

Also wondering what the impact of it being off the App store for so long has been...
