Skyrim

When I think of the best RPG of all time. Skyrim immediately popped into my head.

The game starts with you being a condemned prisoner and waiting your turn to get your head cut off. But then... a dragon saves the day! You manage to escape in the chaos and start your career as a dungeon crawling warrior or mage.

The game lets you choose whether to be one of a few types of humans, elves, Catman or Lizardman. You also get to choose what to put in your hands too, whether you wanna hold a sword, an axe, a mace, a shield, a bow, a fireball, a snowball or a lightning bolt. You get to play with whatever toys you like and the more time you spend on your weapon of choice, the more skilled you become, dealing more damage.

The world of Skyrim is huge and you can visit lots of different towns, interact with heaps of NPCs and get loads of quests for lots of gaming fun.

The storyline quests build you up as a hero Dragonborn who has magical shouting powers (I need these for my job as a school teacher). You are responsible for putting down a big evil dragon and save all of Skyrim!

It's alot of fun with heaps of dungeons crawling with oversized rats, wolves, zombies, bandits, trolls and wizards for you to kill.

You get to build up your reputation with various factions in the game, gain followers, buy houses, etc. Some factions may start hostile towards you and you can win them over by helping them out. Others may get cross at you if they find out you've been helping their enemies. So watch out for the politics!

The game can keep you busy for many hours and the story is very well written so it's fun to roll new characters and play it again.

My favourite memories of this game include playing as Khaajit (Catman) and levelling up my sneaking skills to pickpocket NPCs and exchange stuff in their inventory, taking something of theirs and giving them something random in exchange, like furniture.

The Witcher

When talking about best RPGs many series comes to mind and it’s hard to pick just one from them. Many people love The Witcher 3 – Wild Hunt, but if nominating for the best RPG I have to go for the first in The Witcher series.

I always loved dark fantasy and a medieval setting, and playing through Geralt’s adventures the game felt very realistic and I could quickly understand his attitude towards people. I loved that you could pick sides and your choice would actually affect the gameplay, certain quests becoming unavailable if you decided to side with someone. Often you only helped someone because you had no choice, needed the information they could provide or hoped that you will actually get a reward for your work, but not because you actually wanted to help them.

On the other hand, there were NPCs I loved to spend more time with, as conversations were either funny and entertaining, or carried very deep thoughts I could relate to.

The combat is interesting with the two different swords as main weapons and the Witcher signs give a new twist to the usual magic spells. I loved crafting the different potions and spent a lot of time in meditation, thinking how best to assign the ability points, what was my preferred combat. Played through the game many times as I wanted to try different ways of fighting.

But not everything had to solved by brute force, often there is a choice to buy a drink for someone in hopes of loosening their tongue, or try to beat them in dice game. But if brute force is needed what about a good old fashioned dwarven decking… erm… I mean fist fight in the inn?

And the choices you made through the game would even carry over to the next one if you decided to use your save file when starting The Witcher 2 – Assassin of Kings. Of course the latest game, The Witcher 3 – Wild Hunt is more appealing to someone playing these games for the first time now, but I think credit has to be given to the first instalment of the franchise as it has been a unique game at its time of release.

I will say there's a strong difference between best and favourite for me. My favourite is Fable 2 which isn't the most boastful in terms of RPG mechanics but honestly, it's a comfort.

In my opinion, It's Fallout New Vegas.

The expansive world, the crazy questlines, it was one of the first games I experienced where my playthrough was not the same as the other people I knew who were playing it. (aka my dad lol)

Although as I'm playing through Baldur's Gate 3 right now, that answer may change.

In my opinion I think the fallout franchise is one of the best rpg game I have played ever. Getting to put yourself in an after nuclear disaster. The best part is having options to choose from during different dialogs to have different out comes. Then fallout 4 came along and you got to really immerse yourself into the game. You got to make the look of your character very detailed. You got to create your own small neighborhood the way you wanted. Having the freedom to create a character and neighborhood made me really get into the game.

Intro:

I’ve been umming and ahhing over the last couple of days as to which of the many RPGs i’ve dedicated my life to playing that I’d like to review first on Just About. From my love of mmorpgs in Jagex’s flagship franchise ‘Runescape’ dating as far back as 2003, to the recently released hit ‘Baldur’s gate 3’ it’s safe to say i’m a bit of a fan of the RPG genre. It would be quite easy for me to pick and write about one of the more popular games under the RPG umbrella as being my favourite, but for me, the game that has  really cemented itself as my favourite over the years and earned it’s place atop my RPG list is Monster Hunter: World.

Monster Hunter: World (MHW) is an ARPG (action role-playing game) developed and published by game giant Capcom and is considered the 5th main-line game in the series.

Gameplay:

As with most RPGs, MHW is INCREDIBLY complex, with a huge array of ways to spec out your character to suit your playstyle. I’ll try my best to keep this review as brief as possible as there’s genuinely so much to his game that I could quite comfortably write a five thousand word essay and still miss things out...

Anyone who’s played any of the MH games knows that they’re a mixed bag. Some are quite easy and focus more on the story, whilst some are really intense and revolve almost entirely around combat and gear progression. MHW definitely falls into the latter of those two camps, taking the difficulty up a notch on it’s predecessor ‘MH Generations: Ultimate.’

MHW is not for the faint of heart and from the very outset you’ll be thrown into hunts that involve either trapping, or killing, deadly prey.

The core gameplay loop of any MH title is essentially; receive target, hunt target, kill/capture target, turn in target for a reward, upgrade gear with bits of said monster, repeat. Despite this seeming quite repetitive, there’s a HUGE variety of monsters that all have different attacks, movement patterns, health pools, defences and migration patterns. There’s a lot of skill that goes into being an effective hunter, but I’d break down MHW into two major skill groups.

Firstly, combat. What can I say? It’s fast, It’s fluid, it’s FUN! The game offers fourteen different weapons, all with multiple playstyles. For each weapon category there’s loads of different variations of that weapon, again, all that do different things. Want to fire poison arrows from a giant bow constructed of monster carapace? YOU CAN! Want to swing dual blades around in a fiery inferno, burning everything in sight? YOU CAN! Want to… well… you get the point. There’s a lot to it. But what makes it so fun is the ability to tailor it to your specific tastes based on what you feel suits you. If you want to master all of the weapons that MHW has to offer then you’re in for a long ride, but as a die-hard player I’ve managed to try all of them at one point or another and there’s not a single one that doesn’t carry its weight.

Secondly. Armour. Every good hunter needs a strong set of armour and MHW does not disappoint. For every monster in the game there are multiple sets of armour that again, all do different things. The skill in armour crafting is working out what armour perks compliment the weapons you’re currently using (and bloody hell is there a lot of them). There’s perks to let you run longer, there’s perks to let you resist elemental damage, heck, there’s even perks that let you drink potions faster! Every one has it’s place in the game and i’ve experimented with most in some way or another. Capcom did an incredible job with the armour models in MHW and frankly, who doesn’t love a game where you get to run around wearing the hide of your conquests as a trophy? I mean… just LOOK at these!

Unfortunately for all that it does right, I do still have a few gripes with MHW. Chiefly that some gear is still locked behind fetch quests… I mean, come on Capcom, nobody enjoys fetch quests… Especially when they take so long because giant dragon eggs weigh one hundred pounds and mama dragon is chasing you for pilfering them!

For now that’s all I’ll say as we’ve been instructed to keep this as brief as possible, but for anyone who hasn’t yet tried a MH title, I’d recommend giving them a go as soon as possible!
