The latest CoD topped the UK boxed retail charts this week according to GI.biz. That's despite receiving the worst reviews in the franchise's history with a Metascore 20 points below Vanguard, the previous nadir, and lower than other prominent 2023 duds Redfall and Forspoken.
According to Bloomberg (via GI.biz), the game was built in less than half the usual time under intense crunch, and was allegedly envisaged as an expansion for last year's Modern Warfare 2. Activision has denied this, saying it was a "premium game" from the beginning, but Bloomberg cites more than a dozen current and former devs saying they were told, or believed, that it would be an expansion set in Mexico to fill the gap after the next full CoD was delayed into 2024.
