The Nether is a hard place to be, with bipedal pig men and enemies that will fire flaming projectiles at you from a distance, but it's not particularly hard to get to. As long as you have a bucket, some water, and a lava source, you can create an obsidian portal to warp there in no time at all. And for your efforts, you can find lots of Nether-exclusive loot and resources.
The Nether can also look strikingly beautiful at times, with naturally generated fortresses and lavafalls surrounded by red netherrack and slowing soul sand.
