This week I want to show you one of my favourite seasonal events from Final Fantasy XIV. This one is not related to any real life celebrations (like the All Saints’ Wake which is starting today) but it is also a returning one, and it took me 2 years of playing to realise what was the pattern behind it. So I made a guide to help sprouts understand the scheduling of this event better than I did.
This event is called Moogle Treasure Trove, and the main reason why I think it’s so awesome is that you get extra rewards for activities you already do in the game, making it perfect for busy people or new adventurers who don’t have much content unlocked yet. To put it shortly how the event works (and my infographic was not clear enough for you): if you complete selected dungeons, trials and raids (which are part of the daily roulettes you do for levelling or tomestones which you spend on gear) you will get event-specific tomestones, which you can exchange for rewards.
And the reason why you shouldn’t ignore this event if you are someone who started recently, still progressing through the story or had to ignore some content due to reasons like lack of time, not knowing they existed or deciding dodging mechanics with 7 other people all day was not for you: most of the rewards you can get in this event are from other content already existing in the game.
Checking Twitter on the day when the event started reminded me that some people just don’t want others to be happy. There were people saying how this event is not efficient to get these items, as farming the Extreme Trials from previous expansions is better… but that comes easy from someone who has 7 other friends ready to jump in and spend many hours farming a mount which is a random, not guaranteed drop.
So if you don’t have enough friends, you have to rely on Party Finder, and people to actually stick around even after they got their mounts, otherwise you have to look for new members, and the newcomer might get the mount next and leave instantly… you get the picture. Or you can do the duty 99 times for tokens which you can exchange for the mount… Or just check which duties are included in this event which give the special tomestones, how many they give, do a few of them and get a nice mount. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which route you would prefer to get a flying snake.
But mounts are not the only items you can get. There’s also craftable items, Triple Triad Cards, music scrolls or things from side content which is not as easy to do now, because there are less people doing it these days. So if you were not around when the endgame areas in previous expansions were buzzing with players, then you are most likely ignoring them, because you have better things to do to catch up to current content.
Yoshi-P himself said recently at one of the events that the game is not designed in a way, that if you start right now you will be able to catch up to your friends and do every single content. And I think that’s right. The game has been around for 10 years, there's a huge variety of content to please all types of players and keep those entertained who are constantly subscribed to the game. It is only natural that even myself who only missed out on 3-4 years or so, have to make the decision what I want to spend my time on.
This event which runs for about a month before every major patch release, with rewards changing each time is a great way to get some things which you don’t fancy grinding for. And you still have to work for them, the most expensive one will cost you 100 tomestones and you get 2-7 from an average duty. So if you want to go the extra mile and not just wait for eligible dungeons to pop up in your daily roulettes, then it's time to dust off your Blue Mage (or start one if you don't have this job yet), check out Party Finder and see how fast you can clear a dungeon which would take 20 minutes with a normal group. It's quite fun actually:
