Hey all! Happy Monday!? How was everyone's weekend?
I just wanted to share a random thought as it may help motivate some of my fellow creators and also ask a question!
Firstly, having 2 YouTube channels which I created YEARS apart, the first and largest one when I knew nothing about YouTube, and the second but currently much smaller one which I started recently putting what I had learned from years of YouTube trials and errors into practice has given a unique view on companies reaching out to me to collaborate by sending me stuff for example to cover on my channels.
The reason I bring this up is the smaller channel which is just over 2k subs has brought me some cool collaborations recently which I am currently working on which I could never have imagined versus my bigger channel which has over 10x the amount of subs at over 20k!
Why is this? Well 2 things, niche and views.
My original and bigger channel has a ton of "buckets" of different viewers in that 20k number which all have different interests and are not centered around one niche. This is due to the nature of me learning on the job you could say with this first channel. I legit didnt know how to edit videos, record videos, make it sound good, create interesting videos or service a particual audience or niche... I was literally learning in real time, in-front of the world, I recommend you do this too, but take my advice hear on board to grow way quicker than I did.
So these buckets of different people become a problem when you change your channel topic or niche as they may not be interested in your new area of interests which you are covering. My example was I got a lot of subs from covering fortnight for a fair while before i pivoted to covering the xbox platform. This means there is probably a LOT of those subs who played Fortnite on places other than Xbox and have no interest in what I am doing now so it can slightly hold you back, as your video goes live, YouTube serves it to your existing subscribers and your Click through rate dies as a lot of them have no interest and dont click or watch.
Now my smaller channel from day one, I have been focused on being PlayStation platform coverage only... nothing else... at all. So the viewer knows what they are here for, is more likely to return and therefore your videos slowly but steadily should hopefully generate more views as you avoid the problem I just mentioned about your audience following you for a completely different topic which you may no longer serve.
Now why I'm telling you all this, is in the past few months ive had some really cool companies reach out to me regarding my smaller Pure PSX channel to cover cool products and the like whilst my larger channel is currently comms silent.
So the moral of the story is niche down to grow and get some cool opportunities your way and if you go to far down the line with a niche which you grow tired of or whish to change it may actually be more worthwhile to start a new channel from scratch if there isnt much crossover (I've tried to minimize having to do this by making private 100's of videos from topics i previously covered which I no longer cover on my larger channel). Hopefully this helps you avoid some pitfalls I have.
Now my question...
What is the coolest thing or opportunity you have had from a company or community which you cover on your channels?
Peace out!
Murray
