After resting at the inn in-game, I encountered a black screen and lost many Rift Crystals. Upon game rebooting, I discovered a whole town of dead NPCs. Fortunately, they seem to respawn after a few days. However, the main quest NPC, Captain Brant, vanished.
I was on the verge of resetting my 35+ hour game, but it turns out he was just in a coffin, waiting to be resurrected—phew!
Just a tip: always check your pawns for symptoms of the Dragonsplague before resting at any inn to avoid surprises.
