Zarzakh is the latest star system in EVE Online. It can be beautiful, as our bounty for the best Zarzakh screenshots shows, but it's also a treacherous place that can lead to your demise quite easily if you're not careful. We asked you, the Just About EVE Online community, for your thoughts on Zarzakh. What's working for you? Are there any sticking points? You gave us a mixed bag of replies.
Heretical Coffee had some stern words, saying Zarzakh is "little more than an arena for sweaty nerds to fight in", while Rdog shared a personal anecdote of having jumped to the system only to be "greeted by about 80 ONI at the gate", which is a "vibe killer" for your average capsuleer. Or, you know, just a killer.
Salartarium sees Zarzakh as a clever fix for what many see as an underpopulation problem. EVE is caught in a catch-22: new systems are fertile ground for exciting new content that attracts new players, but every new system risks diluting the player-to-system ratio further.
"Zarzakh connects space more than filaments ever could. You can now have fleets from your staging reach every corner quickly, rather than just shipping stockpiles from Jita to the nearest staging system. This virtually condenses the map without having to remove systems or change existing mechanics."
greybill acknowledges the convenience of Zarzakh’s effective map compression but argues that by creating shortcuts through space, Zarzakh and its stargates "make the geography of New Eden less relevant."
However, JAKEL33T likes the "PvP mess" gameplay it has introduced, and the fact its main purpose is to serve as a toll road of sorts for null bloc shenanigans, PvP brawls, and gate camps. NPSI.Rocks echoes the thoughts of our aforementioned screenshots bounty, saying they "love the nebulosity and clouds in there, flying round the station is an absolute delight", but they haven't experienced as much action as some of you, so don't quite have the same complaints.
Finally, FUN INC has some thoughts on the Zarzakh meta, saying it feels like it could be a dangerous place, especially since some of the mechanics lend themselves to manual piloting. He reckons the meta "will be kiting instead of brawling, as kiting allows you to take engagements on your terms and disengage as needed". He also suggested some changes to the system, such as temporary blackouts with no local chat to synergise with the lack of directional scanner - Heretical Coffee isn't a fan of that idea, while Rdog is.
