One for the anime lovers: Soukyuu no Fafner (Fafner in the Azure)

Caution:Spoilers inside

At the beginning of the story you see a quiet and peaceful little island, then the protagonist has to learn that the outside world has been destroyed by aliens 28 years ago. Even the magazines he thought he got from Tokyo was produced locally on the island to keep up the façade and make the inhabitants think that everything was alright outside of their walls. I'm used to seeing teens in anime having to become the saviour of the world, but with this setting it felt really cruel to then watch them fight and make sacrifices. After finishing the show I was thinking for a long time what the outcome would have been if these kids were actually told the truth from the beginning and were prepared for what was about to come.

Saw

Back in 2004, I believed the true horror icon had died in the 90s with what I like to call 'sequelitis' killing any hope we'd get another compelling villain that would stand the test of time. Then, along came Jigsaw. The sequels lost the charm of the original in a flood of blood and gore, but that first film sealed the deal with a twist.

Caution:Spoilers inside

While two men trapped in a dingy bathroom learn that there's more to the deadly game than meets the eye, a man named Zep watches over them, having kidnapped one of the prisoner's family. Once Zep meets his untimely end, it's revealed that he isn't the orchestrator behind everything, but instead another victim. The dead body between the two kidnappees stands up to reveal that they're the true mastermind.

Worlds End - Simply put because this isn't a spoiler, it starts off as a depressed, bunch of guys trying to get together to relive their hay day and then turns into an apocalyptic Sci-fi mashup which gets more and more interesting as the film carries on.

Fight Club

Caution:Spoilers inside

At first I thought the protagonist played by Edward Norton was just a frustrated man unhappy with his mundane life, but then it's revealed that he actually has multiple personalities and his alter ego is Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt. This twist completely upended the film's plot and left me stunned.
