Pierce Brosnan - Goldeneye - Best performance

In this bond film, I think personally we see this tortured man, as an OO agent, watching his friend die, in a situation he cannot control, he either kills him or he dies himself.

With this film, Brosnan showed us all the wide variety of emotions, as an actor, he was able to hit and act out perfectly, right up until the end.

He went on to do three more films, Die Another Day, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough. In each film, being a huge fan of him he again showed us his activating abilities.

Yes I'm a fanboi, bite me xD

Goldeneye is my favourite Bond film. I once sat down at brunch next to Alan Cummings and had a very pleasant chat but the entire time my brain was telling me "do NOT say I am invincccccible!"

I would have done it, 100% lol

That's some highly impressive self restraint

I know right, I would not have been able to restrain myself, I would have done the post and everything.

It definitely helps that before Bond he starred as Remington Steele, which on the surface, is basically proto-James Bond before Brosnan got the role

Thanks for the question! It's the perfect opportunity for me to rewatch some classic 007 movies. If I had to pick:

  • Sean Connery is the most charismatic James Bond for me.

  • Daniel Craig portrays the most realistically looking spy-professional.

Both actors brought unique qualities to the role, making them memorable in their own ways.

Pierce Brosnan

While I really appreciate the modern look of Daniel Craig Bond movies with the insane stunts that sometimes only rival those of Tom Cruise's in Mission: Impossible, the modern cars, and gritty action, the first image that comes to mind when I think of James Bond is one of Pierce Brosnan.

His version of Bond is the first I remember actively watching on TV. I've since gone back and watched some older Bond movies as well, but the way Brosnan portrayed him just makes the numbers 007 synonymous with his name - at least for me.

His version of Bond is the perfect mix of charisma and skillful agent. I always thought Sean Connery's version (RIP), laid on the charisma a little thick. He was cool and collected but around women he was always a bit too aggressive for my taste. On the other side of the spectrum stands Daniel Craig. Extremely skilled, always ready to fight - the only time his combat spotlight was ever stolen was by Paloma in the previous movie. I could talk about all the other actors who portrayed Bond, but Brosnan had the perfect balance, I feel.

Everyone loves GoldenEye and it's without a doubt one of the most iconic movies ever. It reaches even further than that if you consider other forms of media, such as video games. My personal Brosnan favorite is Die Another Day, however. Writing about him has put me in the mood to re-watch it.

After all of this talk of Goldeneye, I rewatched it at the weekend. It's amazing how faithful the game maps and sound were to the film. I just kept thinking 'Yep, I remember fighting there, and there, and there.

How crazy is it that you can count the really, really faithful video game adaptations on pretty much one hand, even though you're thinking of a roughly 30 year time period. We need more that stay true to the source material.

The first James Bond movie I saw was Goldeneye, so for me it will be Pierce Brosnan. I loved his charismatic look and smooth voice. He made me love the series and I actually watched all of them from the very first one... and as someone who first saw Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and The Highlander... it was so strange for me to associate the name with the young man we see in the early Bond movies. I think once you see discover and actor being 50+ with grey hair it's really hard to watch their earlier movies 😅

Bond isn't a massive thing for me, but I have watched a few!

I prefer the depth and grit Daniel Craig brings to his depiction of Bond. He's probably my favourite. He also that 'look' that works for the role. I think his performance in sky fall was amazing.

L

George lazenby obviously.

primarily because He wore this outfit

but the other reasons are

underdog actor

Lazenby was an Australian model with no acting experience. He bluffed his way into the audition, claiming he’d done several films (he hadn’t).

Anti Bond type?

Bond falls in love, gets married, and tragically loses his wife. Lazenby portrayed Bond’s vulnerability and heartbreak convincingly.

He chooses love over service

didnt over do it

He left us wanting more by only doing one film

realism fight scenes

Other than the new films, Her majestys service had the scrappiest fight scenes and realistic

I've never watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but you've officially convinced me to give it a try, and not just for the outfit. I love that he blagged his way into one of the most coveted roles in film history.

Just like Doctor Who, I think your choice in Doctor or Bond is largely influenced by who was on the screen at the time. Judging from the comments I think a lot of users saw Pierce Brosnan as the face of Bond from his excellent debut in GoldenEye to the ridiculous almost campy final film Die Another Day (2002). I think it also helps that throughout that era we probably saw a spike in James Bond games as well from again the amazing Rare made GoldenEye on N64 to Nightfire and the almost unofficial last outing of Pierce as Bond in Everything or Nothing. Pierce probably got the most likenesses out of the character across all media out of all the actors portraying Bond. (A token mention of From Russia with Love PS2 game which starred Sean Connery breaking Pierce's dominance on the PS2)

However I'm probably going to go against the grain (but not too much) and actually pick Sean Connery. Not necessarily because he was the premiere Bond, or because he one ups the other actors in terms of charm, sex appeal or charisma. It's because if you want to do an impression of Bond, most people will recognise the Scottish Brogue of Connery over any other actor. It's instantly recognisable! Truly, Bond-Prime when you need a shorthand visual or audio representation of Bond.

Great points well made as usual Makster! Despite being of the Brosnan generation, you're right - it was always Connery we'd be quoting and misquoting in the playground!

A

This one has to be Casino Royal in 2006, I think I've always had interest in casinos and high action paced car chases and action scenes but I think I liked some of the character development of james bond showing some of his vulnerability and emotional depth (I'm a counsellor what can I say)

This movie also has a very weird childhood memory for me where I was being bullied in school and I decided to publically fight my bully. 13 year old skinny as me put on facebook "After I knock out xxxx at 1pm lets go see the 1.30pm casino royale movie"

He never showed up, I win by default, enjoyed the movie!

Connery, he is handsome! True gentleman

JB

Daniel Craig. He gives a more grounded version of Bond than the likes of Brosnan and Connery and I feel the films have been written with more emphasis on making him seem human, with genuine emotions to the loss of some of the love interests and supporting characters.

Physically, he is by far the most commanding presence and actually looks like a seasoned spy with a far more muscular physique than the other Bond actors, helping with the realism.

Casino Royal was my favourite of his movies, and despite No Time To Die being well received I found Malik's villain a bit too much of a caricature to be believable, ultimately tainting Craig's swansong.

Id put Connery 2nd but personally wouldn't say it's a close call. And personally, I really don't like Brosnan and find him incredibly slimy and cheesy regardless of the role he's in!

Brosnan for me. The perfect mix of the old and the new. Goldeneye absolutely nails it as a bond film. The others missed the mark a little bit for me. Though, I’ve been meaning to rewatch Tomorrow Never Dies for a while, through my 2024 lenses.

Bond controlling his car like an RC through the car park was absolute peak Q-gadgetry for me
