Honestly, I was aiming to come up with something innovative for the industry, but the best idea I have is "another-talent-show" concept.

While the idea isn’t entirely fresh, I haven't seen anything like it specifically focused on video games. The concept is straightforward: a panel of judges/experts, a stage with a big screen, and individuals pitching their games to an audience.

This format is standard for fundraising, but the twist is to engage a broader audience. Only indie and small studios are allowed to participate - no big companies using this platform to market their AAA projects. The rules are simple: each participant gets 5 minutes to present their game however they like: gameplay, trailers, behind-the-scenes, anything goes. The game must also have a Steam page so viewers can instantly add it to their wishlist. After the pitch, there’s a 5-minute Q&A session where the experts provide feedback, ratings, and advice on how to move forward.

This show could be produced on a budget, with experts being streamers from anywhere in the world, eliminating the need for a studio and a large production team.

My game show would be called Sand Castle Wars

8 teams of 4 people would compete against each other in a knockout style tournament.

Each round has several phases the first phase is a build phase which lasts 1 hour and then it's on to the battle phase. During the battle phase team's take it in turns trying to weaken the opponents sand castle and the first team to have their sand castle collapse completely loses the match. Teams can use a variety of weapons including water balloons, water pistols, beach balls and tennis balls. But they can only use each one once until they have used every weapon. You can attack the castle from any angle but it has to be from a minimum distance of 5 meters away. The same attacker on a team can't attack twice in a row either.

The winning team proceeds onto the next round of the tournament until you get the overall winning team crowned the Sand Castle Wars champions

The tournament winners each win a sand castle wars trophy and £2000

My gameshow would be a different spin on the recent phenomena on BBC here in the UK - The Traitors

The premise of Traitors is for a group of people to earn money through tasks, only for allocated 'traitors' to remain hidden within the group and slowly 'murder' the other contestants to ultimately steal the prize money at the end. It has rounds where each contestant then votes to banish a member of the group who they think is the traitor, ultimately improving their chances of winning the money at the end with the other remaining contestants.

My version of this would be called 'The Saboteurs'.

The premise remains similar: a group of contestants aiming to complete tasks to earn money towards a total end prize fund. The tasks here though would be more challenging in this show, as the aim of the saboteurs is to intentionally lose the team money so it is then placed in the saboteurs own prize fund they could win at the end.

As mentioned, the tasks would be very diffuclt with large sums of money attached to reflect this. The difficult also then makes any attempts by the saboteurs to throw the attempts of the group seem more genuine and just 'unlucky'.

The saboteurs prize pot would remain hidden, with the contestants only knowing the total amount lost as to not give away who the saboteurs are and how much they have stolen. The task difficulty would mean that any member of the group could cause the prize money to be lost so as to make it seem anyone could be the saboteurs.

The contestants would again then be able to vote on who they believe the saboteurs are, increasing their chance of successfully completing tasks and adding to the end prize fund.

The twist is the saboteurs will not be able to win any of the 'normal' prize fund, even if they stay in the show until the very end. The only money they can win is their own saboteurs prize fund, should they make it to the end.

If saboteurs remain at the end, they would win their prize fund but the other contestants would win nothing, adding extra pressure and incentive to remove the correct contestants from the game!

I can't recall the name of the show on Discovery Channel, something related to a scrapyard, but the concept was about creating a vehicle from salvaged parts under a strict time limit, with two teams of four people.

The show I'm thinking of is similar, but focused on game development. Teams of four are locked in an office for 24 hours with a $500 budget, using ready-made engines like Unreal Engine 5 and stock assets to create a playable video game. The host randomly assigns the genre and setting, like a Medieval match-3 or a Cyberpunk platformer.

Adding to the drama, the $500 budget covers both assets/plugins and food, so teams have to decide whether to order pizza for dinner or skip it to buy animation assets or sound effects.

The show you're thinking of will be either Scrapheap Challenge (the UK version) or Junkyard Wars (the US version). Your show sounds very watchable, and I have a name suggestion: The Crunch.

Time trap

Time trap is a high stakes game show where contestants are trapped in themed rooms filled with puzzles, challenges, and brain teasers. The twist is that they are reason against Clock and the only way to escape each room is by solving the challenges before time runs out. The combined elements of escape rooms, strategy games, and physical challenges to create a unique and thrilling experience.

Gameplay

  • Teams: each game is played in teams of two. Each team was work together to solve challenges in each room.

  • Rooms: there are five rooms each with different themes and increasingly difficulty. Thieves can range from ancient Egypt with hieroglyphic puzzles to space station with zero gravity tasks.

  • Time Limit: each room has a strict time limit. If the team fails to solve challenges in time., they lose one of their life lines and must attempt the room again with a new set of challenges.

  • Life lines: the teams start with three life lines. If they lose all three, they’re eliminated from the game.

  • Twists: randomly during the game, a time warp event can cure which adds unexpected challenges or reduces the time limit for a room.

  • Prizes: the winning team is the one that successfully completes all five rooms. They win a cash prize of £50,000. However, for every life line they lose, £10,000 is deducted from their final prize.

TimeTrap combines the excitement of physical challenges with intellectual stimulation of puzzles and strategy. The pressure of the tick adds tension while the unique themed room keep the gameplay fresh and engaging. The addition of events that are offering twists that keep both the contestants and the audience engaged with the show. The team dynamic encourages cooperation and communication making it a show as much about relationships as it is about winning.

This game would appeal to viewers who enjoy problem-solving strategy games and high intensity competition. With its mix of mental and physical challenges trap is designed to be entertaining and nerve racking offering something for everyone.

Who the hell is Kevin Bacon

I’ve thought about this a few times, and while I’ve not gone to the lengths of figuring out whether such a game already exists, my idea is an extrapolated version of ‘six degrees of Kevin bacon’.

The idea is two team of two would team up to take on alternating rounds where they are given a starting point, be it a celebrity, movie, tv show, or song, and they have to work their way to the given end point as quickly as possible.

Example

  1. Denise Richards

Goal: Johnny Depp

Answer route: Neve Campbell (starred together in Wild Things)

Wes Craven (directed Campbell in Scream)

Johnny Depp (directed by Craven in A Nightmare on Elm Street).

Starting with six points, losing a point per connection needed, this answer would be worth 3 points. Or, there could be an ‘optimal’ connection that scores more points where just making the connection is worth less.

After three rounds one team would then tackle the toughest connection of the show and this would be worth prize money, say $50,000. The money starts counting down as soon as the start and end points are revealed, and they have to reach the answer as quickly as possible. Wrong guesses could deduct a chunk of money to discourage random guessing.

It’s a simple concept but one that really gets into that part of people’s brains where useless info is retained and I could see the idea catching on. Hell, they made game shows out of Wordle, so there’s worse ideas out there! 😂

This is great. Did you ever do Wikipedia racing? You choose a target Wikipedia page, then all competitors have to select 'random article' on Wikipedia, and it's the first person to reach the target Wikipedia page only via clicking links within Wiki pages.

I haven’t heard of that but it’s a classic ‘bored in class’ kinda game that I can really appreciate 😂

Now that's back in the 90's

Horribly dating myself but remember back in the 90's when things were simpler? Well you can re-create them with this game show! It'll be a 1v1 format or it can be knock out style as well:

General Pop-Quiz Questions regarding the 90's such as:

  • What year did the PSX come out

  • Mix it up with retrospective questions: Which console had the most games in the 90's?
Or how many concerts did Michael Jackson perform

  • Picture rounds: Pokemon or Digimon

  • Music rounds: name the artist from the snippet of music

Video Game Round: Just matches on Tekken 2 on PSX or GoldenEye on N64

Technology round:
You have to use 90's tech to complete the task i.e.

  • boot a computer, type out a sentence, set up the printer, and then fax it. First one to come out is the winner

  • Use the Yellow Pages to search for a number - first one to dial in wins

  • Listen on the radio for a sound and use the tape deck to record the song. The person with the best recording wins

And of course, it wouldn't be a 90's TV games show with a sudden death round over a pit of gunge
