My opinion might be unpopular, but I think other commentators have already mentioned it: Modern games like Pokémon Legends: Arceus look terrific. If you remove the Pokémon 'fan' glasses, you'll see a game that would have been okay for 2009, not 2022. The world feels quite empty and lifeless. It's quite shocking, considering these games are made by internal Nintendo studios.

I wish the Pokémon team would communicate with and learn from the Zelda BOTW/TOTK teams. If they could achieve the same level of animation, textures, and FX quality seen in the seven-year-old Zelda games, paired with game design focused on discovery and exploration, without empty spaces and dead ends, that game would captivate me for hundreds of hours.

Legends Arceus was a great game, so maybe something similar to it. And what i would like to see specifically in legends ZA are :

  1. New megas. Flygon is really needs a mega. Another maybe similar to charizard and mewtwo, an X form and a Y form.

  2. Something similar to the Battle Frontier

  3. A great story

I would love to have a feature where you could create you own little Pokemon ranch in game and decorate it.

I think it would be interesting to maybe bring back a newer version of the Pokemon contests that were introduced in Gen 3.

Hopefully they have breeding in this game maybe that could also be linked with having your own customized Pokemon ranch

WE'RE GOING BACK TO THE KALOS REGION!

I'm so excited for this and soon as I saw that tower, I guessed it was Kalos and I'm so happy we get a sequel/prequel to Pokémon X & Y after over a decade in a new way!

Legends Arceus felt very adventurous and different to what the mainline games do usually, but I think it'll be exciting to see if technology plays even more of a role in how the mechanics work this time around, like throwing Pokeballs and crafting items!

I'm guessing this might even build on the lore that was touched on in X and Y, either before or after a pretty big thing in the past happens in those games, which could be very interesting...

We're definitely getting Kalosian or Lumiosian (or whatever the region is called) forms, so I'm very excited to see which Pokémon get shiny new forms (as well as see their shiny forms too!) and see how the legendary Pokémon fit into it all too!

And let's not forget the characters! Legends Arceus had so many cool references to previous characters from Sinnoh as well as a few returning faces, so seeing some familiar friends and foes in a new way will be very cool! Especially the Legends Z-A version of Team Flare...

All in all, this is huge for us Pokémon fans and now that Scarlet and Violet as well as Legends Arceus have taken new approaches with the games, we can definitely expect something different!

I think it's high time Game Freak took a look at the battle system and modernised it. I love turn based combat, but it feels like very little has changed over the years with Pokemon's battling. The animations are extremely lazy and some of the models could do with a complete overhaul.

I would go as far to suggest they adopt an open battle system, one like Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3's where you play as the pokemon and are able to roam and cast certain moves on demand.

The bottom line is they just need to do something new for me to consider buying it, I made the mistake of buying Sword & Shield and I won't be doing it again. Arceus was a step in the right direction but they need to do more!!!

I would like to see more scripted events and unique side-stories in Pokemon games.

I feel that an RPG is ripe with opportunity to deviate from the beaten path and craft some really interesting stories with other trainers and professions in the wild. I'd take a cue from the Yakuza series. The side stories are sometimes really touching and meaningful despite the gameplay largely revolving around go point A to B and beat up someone at point B then story resolved.

I think having those quest givers come back in someway would be nice too - so it shows that you're making an impact on that world

Aha! Moments

My answer is nothing too complicated but..

With Arceus, there were many times in the game where I would think: "Aha, so that's why this is this" or "Oh so that's how this came to be in Diamond and Pearl". I think Z-A will need to have the same Aha! moments where the player makes connections from the past to the current region to solidify the lore of the region.

I would like to see the following things in Pokémon Legends: Z-A:

  • The return of the Battle Frontier, in some shape or form.

  • Gym Leader battles. If set in the past, we could see the founding of the Kalos region's gyms/

Pokémon League. If set in the future, we could have gym battles with aged-up present-day gym

    leaders or successors.

  • The game isn’t as easy/simple as the original X and Y games. The main issue with those

games was that they were too easy.

  • Different starter Pokémon along with being able to catch the original Kalos starters in the wild.

  • Mega-evolutions for Luxray (make it an Electric-Dark Type!), and Flygon.

  • New evil team.

  • New forms for Yveltal, Xernas, and Zygarde. Similar to Pokémon Legends Arceus.

  • The Swords of Justice and Keldo too appear along with a new member, as they are all based on

the 4 Musketeers. Along with playing a key role in the story.

  • A new Pokémon or a regional variant that is inspired by Arsene Lupin.

I absolutely loved pokemon legends Arceus.

The settings were beautiful (kind of*) and the game play was updated but still felt like pokemon. So in that respect, I would be happy if it largley remained the same but in a new setting and time.

However, what I think NEEDS to be added to the next Legends game (and all future games) is...

Effort

*In a quick screen shot, modern pokemon games look great but on looking just a little closer there are muddy or blocky textures, still no voice acting, laggy movements, lots of pop in issues and just terrible battle annimation.

The pokemon company are dragging their feet and relying on the name for sales and as a life long fan it really annoys me.

If it can be done with Zelda then it can be done with Pokemon.

I'm sure all developers put effort into their games and work so maybe a better word to use would be Polish?

Scrbzy's avatar

I tend to agree with Paul, I think Game Freak have been putting in the bare minimum for a while now. There's little excuse for them releasing such poorly crafted games when titans such as Breath of the Wild exist. The technology exists for them to make the open world pokemon game everyone wants but they know people will buy anything with the Pokemon name on it.

Paul's avatar

I unfortunitly dont agree. If so, where was the patch to improve it? I got the latest game this year and its still a mess.

The poor animation, muddy texrures, its lazyness. polish is the final thing a game should require where as the modern games are lacking more then that.

Pokemon scarlet and volet released in Nov 2022 and Zelda BotW released in March 2017...thats a 5 year difference and they arnt even comparable.

If it was a new game and a new franchise, it would flop.

Makster's avatar

yeah to be fair game development is really difficult and to put animations to all those pokemon is quite intense. Plus it was the first time Game Freak explored using open-world rather than the tried and true formula.

I enjoyed playing it but as with all games it could be better and wouldn't be able to suit everyone's taste

Paul's avatar

We will have to agree to disagree. BotW was also the first game in the franchise to go open world, its no excuse.
