There are plenty of such platforms with 'tasks', usually owned by 'bad' webmasters who sell crap traffic.

This reminds me of phone farms on Spotify by users just inflating their songs so they can be added onto playlists and just generated stream numbers (basically artificially)

I don't know anything about this initiative specifically, but since we started Just About we've seen (and been compared to) lots of platforms offering money or other rewards in return for engagement of different types. Whether that's a share of the ad revenue via a web browser, or watching a 30-second trailer, or installing a mobile game (and playing it to a certain level), or adding a game to your Steam wishlist and so on.

I don't object to them particularly - ultimately people will make their own decision depending on the offering - but I do think we're trying to do something different in terms of rewarding people for their authentic engagement. ie. paying rewards where true value is created for others. Whether that's being helpful or interesting in a discussion thread, or completing a bounty that only a real player/fan can complete due to their knowledge or skill.

And as you say, removing the need to have X thousand followers before you can monetise, is a big one in terms of rewards flowing to genuine players rather than just the biggest influencers.

Of course, this higher engagement threshold comes with its own challenges and won't be for everybody, and we'll still be at risk from bad actors in various ways... but we're definitely excited to see if we can scale it up!

TikTok for me is 50/50 - Half of it is really funny and entertaining and the other half is a cess pit of crap that I wouldn't force on anyone.

The TikTok one in particular is something that genuinely worries me.

We know how people are influenced by social media, and we also know it is a younger audience who are using TikTok. It concerns me how something like this could potentially be used as a propaganda tool, or for spreading conspiracy theories or other dangerous content.

It’s a sad state of affairs when my hope is it is “just” used for more advertising of terrible mobile games.
