Every time the "smell-o-vision" topic resurfaces I have to wonder if other people are playing a whole load of games I've never heard of because the medieval, magical worlds and survival horrors definitely do not offer smells you want to smell. Even my Sims could probably do with showering more!

I've just mentioned this game in another reply but imagine the Abe games... I don't want to smell his farts after he's chugged some Soulstorm brews!

Yeah, but those Paramite Pies sure do look tasty! 😁

I am both intrigued and alarmed by this... In equal measure...

Not sure about the smell, but I know about the taste of the game cartridges. Nintendo intentionally made the cartridges taste bad by covering them with a non-toxic bittering agent called Denatonium Benzoate. This was done to discourage people, especially children, from putting them in their mouths, thus preventing accidental ingestion. The bitter taste is so potent that it quickly became a topic of discussion and experimentation among gamers, leading to a mix of disbelief and curiosity about how bad these cartridges actually taste.

There was a time they had 4D cinemas where your chairs were moving, you could feel the wind breeze and smell things.... I was already not interested in that, definitely wouldn't want to smell games. I'm not sure people are actually aware what a battlefield would smell like. And I definitely had my share of the smell of dodgy alleys around Manchester so no thanks, I'll pass.

But then the question remains....whats the best smelling video game?

I just know Kirby smells extra delicious

Alex Sinclair's avatar

I'm not sure why, but I think you're right - Kirby would smell nice. But I'm voting for Overcooked.

Nicole's avatar

We are asking a lot of those poor Overcooked smells to compete with blinding rage

Alex Sinclair's avatar

You make a good point. Maybe playing Overcooked would just be a recipe for a smashed smell-o-vision

OK, while keeping it safe for work, what would be the worst game to be able to smell?

Retro Stu mentioned the Abe franchise (Oddysee, Exodus etc) below, and that'd just be grim! 🤢

I think Mario would smell just awful! It's a world full of mushrooms, reptiles, plumbing, and (sulphurous) lava. No thank you! 😆

A Plague Tale: Requiem or even The Evil Within 2 would be 100% a NO from me haha

Boomer's avatar

OK, game over. Samuel wins 🤮

fun fact, back in the day my mate had Resident evil 7 bio hazard on PSVR, and we were in Game (a gaming show here in the uk) and they were selling resident evil 7 candles for you to light and play whilst playing the game in VR, and honestly they smelled HORRIFIC! Like the game is scary enough in VR without it smelling as bad as it looks lol OMG i just did a google search and its still listed on the website lol check it out

I'm not sure fun is the right word for that fact 😂
