Anyone got any suggestions for a decent, casual mobile game? Ideally one that's in portrait rather than having to tilt the screen. I'm on android but assume most games are on both platforms these days outside of things on that apple game pass thing.

I play Monopoly on my phone twice a day. I enjoy it and I am on board 238 and I haven't paid for anything at all. You can make serious progress without having to pay for things.
What sort of genres do you enjoy?

I downloaded the NYT Games app, which has a few puzzle games like;
Spelling Bee - how many words can you make with 7 letters?
Wordle - get 6 chances to guess a 5-letter word
Connections - group words that share a common thread
Letter Boxed - create words using letters around the square
Tiles - match elements and keep your chain going
Sudoku - try this number game, minus the math
Crossword - daily 7x7 crossword
On mobile I tend to go for the casual pick up and play, quick burst short game and not too complicated. Nice simple controls rather than a "real game" adapted to mobile.
The New York times games app sounds interesting, downloaded it and will give it a go. Assumes that would be for subscribers only.
I recently played through Game Dev Story. There's definitely a cap where it stops being fun and starts getting super repetitive, but it's a fun little game regardless
Vampire Survivors, an obsolute masterpiece.
In a few months will be released a Loop Hero, this one can easily 50-70 hours of gameplay with no donations.
