Ill start with always online capability allowing developers to ship unfinished games and then patch them overtime to the state they should have been in on day 1 at launch.

My complain is almost the same, but is about live service games, that by itself isn't the problem, my favourite game is a live service game. But what bothers me is the game be able to work offline and the company let it die just for greedy. Like what happen with The Crew.

There is no justification for that game or many others to not be able to play it offline. Other exemple is DarkSpore, the need of a server is to play it coop, and it died before I could be able to play it. Can't wait for the The Crew Revival project to be released!!

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

Very true! I see Ubisoft have announced they are working on offline modes for the crew 2 and crew motorfest which is great news as I really enjoy those games, would be a shame for all games of that type to meet the same fate as the crew, maybe some legislation is needed in this space to protect consumers a bit more

I mean it goes with the saying 'Art is never finished it is abandoned'.

It is difficult to say where the blame really lies as well - whether it is a publisher pushing for a release date for fit in with a gap in the financial quarter or an developer with poor leadership.
I think there is an irony of having Minecraft on the header considering it released in an Alpha state and was steadily built upon.
Even Uncharted 4 - one of the most critically acclaimed games of last generation required a day 1 patch so it although it can be avoidable, it is better that it isn't

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

The header is purely for illustrative purposes and not intended to be me calling any of them out.

Sturmer's avatar

Exactly! It’s shocking when a 5-man indie studio can deliver a complex game with multiple mechanics, free of major flaws, while gaming giants with teams of 400+ release absolute garbage or spend four years on a remake.

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

I find an awful lot of my wow moments in gaming these days are coming from the indie space! They are the bright star of the gaming world right now imo! Well and Nintendo I just think they produce magic consistently, and personally really enjoy there games and content!

Sturmer's avatar

Yup yup yup, like 80% of my meetings at the Gamescom I desided to dedicate to indie, will drop some interviews shortly.

Nice, look forward to checking them out

Why are microtransactions bad for the players and the industry in general?

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

In my experience they are bad because they are now used as a method of additional monetisation in full price games (which is a no no in my book) with content removed which would previously be included in a full release or unlockable in game via playing the game, this has happened due to the purpose of being sold via microtransactions to users at an additional fee. Remeber the good old days of buying a game then being able to unlock cool stuff by playing in game? Now they would rather you just paid for most of that. Now I don’t mean real DLC which is actual additional content which is fine to be paid for obviously like new story chapters or whatever. Do you think they are good for players?

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

Actually maybe instead of microtransactions I should have picked live service games? lol

Sturmer's avatar

I think we need to evaluate each game differently, as microtransaction implementations vary greatly. Take EVE Online, for instance: you can spend money to speed up progress or cover losses, but you can’t pay to win. You can also invest your time and skill as a player to achieve the same benefits.

Another example from your list is Minecraft. Minecoins aren’t necessary to fully enjoy the game. You can use them to buy skins or packs, but you can also download similar content for free or donate directly to the creators.

Then there's Overwatch 2 in your screenshot. There’s absolutely no need to spend money there—it's an esports FPS game where you get access to all abilities and characters without paying.

As for single-player games with storylines where you can buy skins, that’s beyond my understanding hehe. Still, no one is forcing you to buy anything in these games. You don’t gain any in-game benefits, so it's more of a premium option for those who have extra money to spend—why not?

The real issue is microtransactions in pay-to-win games, where you can literally purchase premium ammo that deals double damage. Thankfully, these games are usually trash. You’ll never see them winning awards or getting decent Metacritic scores; they just exist on the fringes.

CMDR Henckes's avatar

You pay 70 USD in a game, the game even isn't multiplayer focused or even multiplayer at all, so that means there is almost no cost to keep a server, and for you to unlock a outfit in that game or a special weapon, you have to play 5, 10, 15 USD for it. So yes the microtransactions are a real and big problem!

INTRUCTIONS BOOKLET

Makster's avatar

I'd say the loss of an Instruction Booklet is the one of the worst things we have lost in games recently.

Not too sure what an Intruction booklet is.. may have to look it up as it might be a new thing that was recently taken out.

I think it's the sense of entitlement people have for games.

If a game isn't how they like then they pirate or leave it up to the work of modders to fix/ adjust. There's obviously a vision developers have and there should be a sense of respect for what creative decisions are made whether it is censorship, post-game DLC, or console exclusivity. The gaming industry doesn't solely depend on the good will.

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

those three elements you mention are very different to shipping an unfinished game and then patching the heck out of it or having it threadbare on launch to fill with microtransactions tho in my mind? I think the three things you have mentioned I agree with and have no problem with as then the user is making an informed purchasing decision, which they are not when they are buying games they think are finished or complete when very often they are not unfortunately and are rush out the door or designed to be a cash cow full of MT.

Makster's avatar

? I didn't mention anything about patching games in this response..

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

No you didn’t, but I did in response to you saying you think it’s the sense of entitlement gamers have being one of the worst trends in gaming recently. As I feel the issues you raise would be lessened if people didn’t feel they were being taken advantage of all the time paying full price for sub par quality / half baked games.

Sturmer's avatar

Console exclusivity to boost hardware sales—especially for developers who initially planned to release on all platforms.

Turning previously subscription based mmos into F2P which is then filled with microtransactions and basically becomes a pay to win game.

In Lineage 2 I did long questlines for some gear which had superior stats, when they made it F2P they changes the world and thrown that item at you as starting gear, taking away the sense of accomplishment veteran players had, and they also introduced items to buy which gave you advantage in the duels to become Hero on your server.

In Star Trek Online you lost stuff you got from pre-ordering the game or by paying for lifetime subscription when the game became F2P. I got ship designs and uniform packs which were removed from me because they became purchasable packs. Like.. what the hell? It caused quite an uproar among those who paid almost $400 for a lifetime subscription.

Aion was completely ruined both in the world design and by introducing items you could buy and gave you an unfair advantage in PVP. A game which has open world PVP should have power items buyable for real money.

Removing content that you paid, Bungie did that with Destiny 2, with the excuse that the game was “taking up space and messing with balance”.

Since that day lot of player lost credibility and stopped playing.

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

Bring out Early Access Games and not Finish it or Patch it Properly

DEAD MATTER.

FirestormGamingTeam's avatar

I'm just done with games that come out that are not finished, MCTS never bothered me as long as it was not P2W. I'm just tired of games coming and flopping badly, because its all about money now instead of developers skill in making games and caring about what they are doing.

JHenckes's avatar

Live-Service for sure, when the fever for games like Destiny started to grow, many games like this came out and died and that was horrible for the players as there was a promise of future content that didn't arrive because the game didn't sell well. In other words, it was a horrible fever that, thank God, got better with time!

Amoni P's avatar

Games being touted as taking 60+ hours as a signifier of their worth/value/how good they are. Let me tell you, Mass Effect: Andromeda would have been a lot better of a game as something that took just 20-30 hours to complete rather than the massive sprawling game with so many useless side missions that were boring and uninspired.

There are so few games that pull off the open world, 60+ hour completion time, and I don't even think the ones that did it successfully really needed it to be a good game. Maybe it's just because I'm getting older and all, but I just don't have the time and energy to play a game that takes that as long as a JRPG to finish. Plus, I feel like so often the content that gets you to 60+ hours is so boring, tedious, and obviously filler content that it doesn't need to be there.

I want shorter games. Maybe if every game wasn't trying to be 60+ hours of content we could have games that didn't take nearly 10 years to develop.

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

Totally agree with your point! I am all for better shorter games without all the filler just to make it longer for the sake of it!
