After my post about x premium being good value in the tech community on here… here I am with another unpopular opinion. The best value and best convenience in gaming is to ditch your local hardware, use a cloud gaming smart tv app (or on a fire stick etc) and sign up to GeForce now, boosteroid or Amazon luna.
Let’s compare the ps5 to GeForce now priority (which i believe to be a similar spec of hardware). This is £8.25 a month if paid for in 6 month blocks. You have zero initial hardware cost, no online gaming membership fees & have a full range of retailers with competitive pricing to buy the game keys from at much lower prices than the PlayStation store. You also have no additional electricity cost that local powerful hardware would draw. The majority of major releases this year have been supported by GeForce now.
In summary the running costs are £8.25 a month with no up front hardware costs.
Now let’s look at the ps5. You have an upfront cost of £389 for the digital edition, if paid for yearly a £5 a month ps+ essentials charge. Let’s say 25 hours a month of gaming at an electric cost of £1.88 a month. Total monthly cost of £6.88.
This means you are paying £1.37 more a month to use GeForce now than using a local ps5. Taking into account the £389 up front cost of the ps5, it would take 283 months or over 23 years! before the cost of GeForce now becomes more expensive than the local ps5 setup.
On top of this you will be paying far less for games & the hardware will be upgraded every couple of years to the newest graphics card in the cloud. No additional one off hardware costs, like a ps5 to ps5 pro upgrade & future generations would entail. You can also play your games on any supported device, phone, tablet, laptop, tv etc & no big game downloads or patches to deal With.
It also wipes out the initial startup costs which are a barrier to entry for new gamers joining the hobby or to hardware upgrades for existing gamers.
