It's possibly (likely?) an unpopular opinion, but my favorite Spider-man game is Treyarch's Ultimate Spider-Man from 2005. It was simplistic, but it was fun. Open World games were still somewhat novel at the time, and the straightforward beat-em-up combat felt good. Plus I had (and still have) a soft spot for the old Ultimate Marvel universe, particularly the Spiderman and X-Men books. For a decent chunk of time they were the only comics my local library had, being able to play a related, but seperate story on my PS2 while I waited for more news about the just-announced sequel series to .Hack.

As for the Sony game, I had similar issues to you with the side content. I will say that I did enjoy the gang hideout activities, if only because approaching them with stealth made it feel similar to the Batman Arkham games, which I'm very much a fan of.

I loved the Ultimate Spiderman game too! I was a big fan of the comics at the time but I think what let it down for me was the combat. I really didn't like the webbing in that game.

Playing as Venom was also cool though you could easily cheese a lot of the enemies by spamming the long range heavy attacks

I beat it and I loved it! But I'm a big fan of the web head - favourite game based on him is the PSX game!

I beat Spiderman on PS4 Pro and I thought it was very decent. I'd rate it 4/5 or even 5/5 since I played it all the way through. I got the GOTY edition which included all DLC.
I really did like his dynamic with Black Cat and doing her hide outs but I think the DLC was too much of the same thing so I gave up after the first episode

Man, I played the game and I just loved it all the way through. I'm a bit biased because I already love the style of the game itself (open world, superhero, similarity to the Batman trilogy), but Spider Man has a very well-done story, villains who have great moments and battles, and the very movement of the game is a lot of fun!

I understand the game's shortcomings of becoming easy and repetitive for the side quests, but I think that's standard for any open world game, Spiderman manages to get away from that a bit with several side quests with a beginning, middle and end story.

The DLCs are good, but I think it's important to get to know the story told in them before moving on to the next games, not that it will be extremely important, but it will help you become more immersed in the story!

Ok cool, I do have the other games as well & will be playing them once I’ve done a few other style of games in between, so I will make sure to do the dlc first when I come back to it in the future for the next game.

Yeah I did enjoy the main campaign, I’m kinda just focusing on the bits I didn’t like really in this. 20 hours (I did a decent amount of collectible stuff as well) was about the perfect length for me as I was just starting to get tired of it right at the end.
