I think it helps if the website that one is looking to cite is actually producing "interesting" content.

Ultimately, backlinking only gets you so far. The better strategy would be to create interesting and unique content. And that would get you cited by a lot more publications.

Sadly, a citation provides zero value to your domain authority if the rel attribute blocks crawlers, which is the case for 99.99% of internet links and basically 100% of social networks and forums.

Has Just About stopped pursuing the "blogger as content creator" route?

I only see the option of bounties now... Which is fine... I guess.

If I understood you correctly, yes, they’ve been prioritizing video content and images on social platforms over text submissions. It started a few months ago with EVE Online, when they introduced reward tiers like $10 for video and $2 for text. Now, in most cases, the text option has been removed entirely.

We discussed this on Discord - it does hurt their SEO, but it's something they’re aware of.

But my original post was more about link exchanges between site owners and bloggers outside of JA.

I can't see the "start new discussion" button anymore... So does that mean that Just About won't be orienting itself towards being like Neogaf or Reddit? I thought that was the focus about 2-odd years ago.

The front page also now no longer promotes Neogaf or Reddit style content anymore.
