Why is it only ever facts that get described as mind-boggling? Just for once it’d be nice if someone said: “Alex, that’s a mind-boggling shirt you’ve got on.” At any rate, prepare your minds for a righteous boggling as we share eight-and-a-half EVE Online facts provided by those who know the game best - our expert player community.
EVE Online Fact #1 - Naming places
Our first fact comes from FUN INC, pipping NPSI.Rocks, who came to say the same thing:
“Poitot is the only named system in Syndicate. It even has its own website and lore entry.”
EVE Online Fact #2 - As simple as ABC…
Thankfully, NPSI.ROCKS had a second fact up their sleeve:
“There’s at least one mistake in the ordering of the tiles in Reykjavik’s EVE Monument. They’re almost in alphabetical order, but not quite.”
We suspect somewhere at CCP HQ, there’s an intern trying to keep a low profile.
EVE Online Fact #3 - Get by with a little L’p from your friends
As one of EVE’s most senior players, you might expect Rushlock to know it all. But even as an avid explorer with years of scanning, bookmarking, and working signatures, someone on Twitch recently gave him an EVE lesson. Rushlock’s fact has inspired us to schedule an EVE quick tips bounty, so get thinking.
“Pressing ‘L’ opens a window that displays all your bookmarks in your current system. My mind was blown, and my gameplay will never be the same. You can learn something new every day in EVE.”
EVE Online Fact #4 - Persistence isn’t futile
Proof of the calibre of our EVE Online community, Rixx Javix has directly shaped the game, and came to flex his very own fact. His own ship, for that matter:
“The Maulus Navy Issue was introduced into the game in a direct effort to get me to stop talking about banning warp core stabilizers. There’s even a nod to this in the ship’s description: ‘borrowing innovative concepts from local pirate bands’.”
EVE Online Fact #5 - Rank and filing system
Here’s another stellar fact that even veterans like MacGybo didn’t know about. But now we all do, thanks to JAKEL33T:
“In the sub-menu, when changing ammo, it’s automatically ranked with longest range at the top to shortest at the bottom.”
EVE Online Fact #6 - Calling in the cavalry
Here’s Swagger Olacar with a fan-favourite fact:
“EVE Online holds the record for largest multiplayer video game PvP battle, breaking a record set by… EVE Online.”
That battle has been named ‘Fury at FWST-8’; the 14-hour-long clash had an astonishing 8,825 players. Here’s a bonus fact on us: the same battle also secured EVE an additional record for the most concurrent players in an internet battle. It had 6,557 participants, once more breaking a record that EVE had previously set. It’s no wonder CCP Hellmar is so proud of EVE’s single shard system.
EVE Online Fact #7 - It has to be seen to be believed
While we’re discussing records, Eaglefirefly provided a fact that they were fortunate enough to witness with their own eyes.
“The battle of B-R5RB was the largest, most expensive PvP battle in the history of gaming at the time. It was so large that the in-game value lost in real-world currency was around $300,000. It even made it into Wikipedia. And I was there.”
That’s the equivalent of over $400,000 today. That battle also set a Guinness World Record for the costliest internet battle. EVE surpassed it again during 2021’s ‘Massacre at M2-XFE’. Are you noticing a pattern here?
EVE Online Fact #8 - My work here is done
Changing the geography of New Eden is no minor feat. The next fact, brought to you by greybill, is testament to the power of nagging:
“The reddit user u/StainGuy deleted their account after CCP introduced a Lowsec gate to the Nullsec region of Stain, which they had campaigned for and posted about for literal years on the r/eve subreddit.”
CCP announced the change on 1 April, leading many to believe it was a joke. But here’s the proof:
EVE Online fact #8.5 - Believe hard enough and it might be true
Why didn’t the Autothysian Lancer go to the ball? Because it had no-body to go with. Except that might not be true. We haven’t been able to verify orik Kado’s claim, and as greybill points out, it might just be an urban legend. Still, an amusing myth is almost as good as a fact, so here you are:
“When you carry a corpse in your ship and you get scanned by an Autothysian Lancer, it may end up killing you to take the corpse.”
What other EVE Online facts and urban legends do you know about? Share them in the replies! Some text has been amended for brevity. You can find the original wording at the bounty post.
