Don't worry, I'm not entering my own bounty. But I have to share my personal favourite, from the spectacularly tense The Lighthouse with Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson. This scene really took my breath away; it's brilliant, funny, moving, layered, epic, and unexpected:

An easy one for me, because I often use part of it when questioning people why they did something.

The first Jurassic Park film is iconic, no question, and whilst most probably remember Ian Malcolm for quotes like "Life, er, finds a way" or "That's one big pile of sh*t" I love him for the line:

Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.

The fact they bring Ian to the island because of his views on chaos theory and he ends up being the voice of reason in this moment is glorious. Everyone is in awe of the island initially but Ian stands up to hold Hammond to account, rightly so too, and because of this moment whenever someone does something questionable I'm often found saying "You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, that you didn't stop to think if you should!". So thank you, Jeff for this perfect delivery.

And, uh, there it is.

I’m not even going to enter, Malcolm’s got my vote.

We recently threw a dinosaur-themed party for my housemate's birthday, so I went as Ian Malcolm and was quoting this monologue all evening. Amongst several other quotes, 'hold onto your butts' made it on to our invitation.

Samwise Gamgee - Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. Because they were holding on to something.

It comes right after a life-or-death moment with Frodo succumbing to the pull of the One Ring. These characters go way beyond exhausted at the end of the second movie, parched for water amid a bloody battle. I honestly feel tired just watching them.

This pivotal speech showcases how Sam is the one who deserves just as much glory as the main hero if not more. He saved his best friend and the world from the apocalypse and is still required to step up as a motivator.

The message isn't wholly unique, being one we've heard a thousand times before. Galaxy Quest summarises it well in just five words: "Never give up, never surrender." Still, it's one that hits home at the height of emotions in the movie and something we could all stand to take on board in our own lives. We all hesitate and doubt ourselves, but we all have a chance to push through it.

I cannot enter bounties but this would've been mine. Just bawling my eyes out and wanting Samwise Gamgee to read me to sleep.

Damien Mason's avatar

The acting is just next level. Moments like this make this trilogy some of the most memorable fantasy films on the planet.

No, YOU accidentally watched the clip again and are crying at your desk on a Friday afternoon!

Retro Stu's avatar

It's a good choice, but it's no Sam explaining what taters are!

Damien Mason's avatar

I'd have definitely put that in if it qualifies as a monologue. I'm thinking we need a Lord of the Potatoes spin-off.

Retro Stu's avatar

Why stop there? Let's go full carby snacks, Lord of the Onion Rings, Lord of the Fries...

Laura Dern in marriage story! Her character as this cool lawyer is really fun to watch and she really commits to this.

my favourite line is definitely 'and the dad isn't there, he didn't even do the fucking. God is in heaven. God is the father and god didn't show up' - basically talking about how the character at the beginning can't display any faults as a mother during her divorce trial, whilst her (soon-to-be ex) husband can be a faulty father. I'd really recommend marriage story to anyone! laura darn is a great supporting actress and acting performances are brilliant all round

What a beautiful scene!

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you."

Liam Neeson, Taken

In my opinion one of the most memorable monologues from film. For most people it doesn't even need a reference to where it's from as it became such a defining part of the film. The cold, calm and motivated words from a man with no limits.

I'm a big fan of the “Bladerunner” universe, so my pick is Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer). That moment is also the start of one of my favorite soundtracks. The context is very emotionally strong. Besides that, I think this actor is amazing, there are so many monologues to pick, and all of them are brilliant.

P.s. I hope to see a bounty of dialogs too!

In case you are wondering music called "Tears in Rain" by Vangelis.

Not sure it'd fit the code of conduct so I won't post them but some of the monologues from Sin City are 🤌

I would say that Liam Neeson in Taken's "I will kill you" monologue is pretty gripping! Taken Phone Speech [HD] (youtube.com) I particularly enjoyed Graham Norton and Liam Neeson parodying it on his show - that tickled me! :D https://youtu.be/iUl9CuL_mno?si=bG_jwAUIJESJQyFt&t=148

Mr foxes monologue in Wes Anderson's 'Fantastic Mr Fox' is one of the most beautiful in cinema, capturing the desire to be perfect at all times, to be 'Fantastic' and the fallout when you fail to meet the standards you set for yourself. I have rarely found a character that captures this paradox in any other form of media.

I love this scene ! It's so sad but beautiful

Though I must admit that I haven't watched the whole movie, I did watch this monologue in history class one time, and it's stuck with me since.

It's as relevant now (if not more so) as when Chaplin spoke it, and it gives me chills every time I hear it.

Brilliant choice. This speech always gives me chills.

Agree. I love every suggestion and submission I've seen so far but this is the first one that feels bigger than film. It has lasting cultural power and significance on a level that only the greatest speeches in history achieve.

I have been shut down By Alex because he is the demon's spawn. So, I am going to edit this post and decide I am going with Liam Neason from taken, the most iconic monologue that is used as memes and jokes across the internet.

This is a great pick, but I have to point out that this is dialogue and not a monologue. Maybe Vincent's dream portion counts since monologues can occur during a conversation, but I'm not sure.

EveOnlineTutorials's avatar

I didn't want to post Vincents part in one post as it would be out of context. So I posted the whole thing.

Alex Sinclair's avatar

EveOnlineTutorials we're with Damien on this one I'm afraid. It's a great scene, but it doesn't quite fit the monologue brief. It needs to be a long speech by one character with minimal interruption or back-and-forth. We have plans for a best dialogue bounty that you could resubmit this to. In the meantime, feel free to edit your submission and replace it.

Others have already posted some of my favourites which had me in tears, so here is one which make me shiver every time I hear it. I think is one of the most outstanding performance from The Avengers (yes I do have a soft spot for Loki):

Ooh I forgot about this speech, its a good one!

Without a doubt for me it has got to be this speech from Rocky in Rocky Balboa, having been through some tough times in my life as I get older, you realise more and more how true everything he says is... its really powerful stuff. I usually fill up a bit when i watch this tbh, it hits me in the feels!
