Cant say I have as I have no need for it. Other than parent controls, what are the features?

Boomer's avatar

It looks like you can share your game library with 5 family members and have separate saves.

Thats actually pretty cool, shame my mrs laptop isnt designed for games.

I did look into this for my two sons but IMO, kids can easily bypass the controls, as it doesn't stop them from changing their own details. so in effect, it's pointless.

Boomer's avatar

That sounds like a frustrating oversight! I would have thought parental controls start with limiting what controls can be accessed. 😕

I use the old version of family sharing to share my library with a family member but it's a matter of coordination because if they are playing I cannot play and viceversa. Looks like this new version might go over this problem so it's worth looking into it.

Boomer's avatar

That's how I'd plan to use it, but it seems almost too good 😄 I'd love to hear your experience if you do try it out.

A

Tested with STEEP on one computer and LEGO Builder's Journey on the other... and it worked: both open and working at the same time on 2 different machines. Both clients have to be in the Family beta, not just the one sharing the library.

Boomer's avatar

Thanks, that's good to know 🙂

Also, what's your experience been with STEEP? I bought it probably a year ago but haven't even started it.

A

STEEP? My daily 10/15 mins of daily skiing for the past 3 years I think? (At the start I'd play it for more time cause I had to explore and do stuff but now it's around 10/15 mins) Practically since I got a computer that could run it properly.

As I can't ski, STEEP is my gateway to skiing. I really enjoy it, even if I wish they had given it a more developed photomode. I only ski, I don't care about snowboard tbh, I suck at suit flying and I'm not that better in paragliding xD But it holds a day in my weekly VP scheduling, usually the saturday. I do think it's accurate of freestyle, as accurate as a game can be when you want to let people do things (don't try all the things you do in STEEP in rl) and without going inot the nuances of he turned slightly downward so it's a bio and not a cork, and the like.

That's sounds cool 🙂 It was the virtual photography that attracted me in the first place!

I'd go the snowboarding route,as I used to love SSX, Cool Boarders, and Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder, and did a bit of snowboarding in my younger days.

What do you feel it's missing in the photo mode? I think Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man, and Cyberpunk have pretty much nailed the formula, but I do wish more let you scrub through footage like Halo's Theatre mode.

Not knowing how snowboard truly works, I cannot give you feedback on how good is snowboarding in STEEP is compared to RL. 😅

For the photomode, keep in mind STEEP came out before Photomodes were cool, on top of my mind I would say:

  • better control on what it is in focus: you can only get what you're looking at in focus and the rest is blurred, but can't do for example the trick of out of focus in foreground while the background is in focus.

  • better camera controls, finer zoom and control over how wide is the field of view.

  • the ability to dose how much filter you're applying. At the moment is on or off.

Aw man, I knew not actually having friends was going to come back to bite me somehow.

I'm pretty sure you have made a few friends here :)

What I'm reading is, "I am going to share my Steam games with you."

😂 Totally kidding. I appreciate that sentiment, though! I definitely feel the same.

I have Final Fantasy, Nightingale and a bunch of old Star Wars games, not sure if they would be any interest :D

Horror and Cats's avatar

Honestly, we probably have a lot of the same old Star Wars games haha. I'm on my work PC at the moment so I can't look at my list, but I go absolutely ham on SW game sales every time they crop up.

Lanah Tyra's avatar

There's a few more which are on my list but I was trying to be good and haven't bought them. Ok that was a lie I spent the money on the Final Fantasy portion of my list 😅

Horror and Cats's avatar

You know what, hilariously I have NONE of those! I know for a fact I've got Starfighter, KOTOR, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and Republic Commando. I think I have more but I can't think of them right now haha.

You have the ones I have on my wishlist lol XD

I use the current family share and it can be annoying when the other person logs into steam and your game closes down because you didn't see the warning. If this new system stops that then it will be even better.

We have had a couple of issues where it just stops working but just going through and re-doing the setup sorts it out.

For several years i use family sharing feature (personal saved, achievements, playhours), but like Groblin mentioned, you need to be aware whos using library right now. I managed to overcome that by utilizing offline mode, so we 2-3 people can plan simultaneously. gonna check new Steam families if they resolved their own limitation.
