EVE Online is all about the friends we make along the way, and what better way to do that than by recruiting new pals to your alliance or corporation? We asked our community of seasoned capsuleers for the best pieces of propaganda and, from meme videos and corporation showcases to war-inspired propaganda posters and pre-battle speeches, you all delivered, showing why the dynamics within the EVE metagame are some of the best around.
James kicked us off with a famous, or maybe infamous, pre-war speech from Goonswarm, which some in the YouTube comments call the "best speech in EVE, period" and "the most devious lick in an MMORPG ever". It's inspiring in its bloody-minded, Patton-esque way, and certainly gives the impression that Goonswarm is not to be trifled with. But let’s just say the language is only fit for space sailors; don’t click through if you’re easily offended!
From pre-war inspiration to post-war humiliation, Brother Grimoire brings us the story of PIRAT, set to the famous Downfall clip of Hitler finding out Germany is about to lose World War II. The PIRAT alliance became notorious for bullying smaller, weaker groups, and once upon a time, they declared war on the Dead Terrorists Alliance, who took it upon themselves to end PIRAT there and then. We’ll let Brother Grimoire pick up the story:
"Dead Terrorists immediately went after the PIRAT war hubs as well as defending friendly structures. Over the course of these engagements, PIRAT realised that they couldn’t defend against the might of Dead Terrorists, so they started putting their members into other corporations to attack structures while avoiding fights. This same tactic is then replicated perfectly in the final fight against the PIRAT war hub, where we joined a group called Space Ants to avoid getting mobbed by multiple nullsec groups that were batphoned in.
"After being soundly beaten, a spy in their comms relayed recordings to us where we got to hear the leadership of PIRAT moaning about war mechanics (that they themselves had abused) and talked about ganking new pilots outside the rookie systems in protest. PIRAT has since become irrelevant, with their members joining up with BLACKFLAG to do more of the same."
Given the significance of conflict in New Eden, it’s a mightily effective recruitment tactic to demonstrate that your corp is vicious and victorious in war. But plenty of members responded with more traditional, and dare we say wholesome, messages. Here’s orik Kado with a recruitment video for his corporation, Spectrum, setting out what the corp gets up to to a lovely inspirational soundtrack. Turn on subtitles for the helpful translation from Spanish to English!
FUN INC also came in with a very brief, but very flashy advertisement for his corporation website, NPSI.ROCKS. That stands for "Not Purple? Shoot It!", which essentially means ‘attack anyone that isn’t in your fleet today’.
Equally flashy and brief, but this time with a sweet heavy metal soundtrack, is Melicien Tetro with an advert for their new proving grounds tournament. The event has been and gone, but with 3.33B ISK on offer, it had an enticing prize to match this video.
I-401 wraps up the video propaganda with this 17-minute epic, enticingly entitled "the Unbiased History of EVE Online - Part 1". We’re sure it’s fitting and accurate that an unbiased history of New Eden focuses heavily on their corporation.
But propaganda doesn’t only come in video form. If Lord Kitchener has taught us anything it’s that the humble poster is an indispensable tool in getting others to sign up to a cause, and again I-401 kicks us off.
AlexGoesTheWorld has some impressively professional designs for the Amarr and Caldari Navy, alongside some additional posters on their Flickr photostream.
Kane Carnifex took a lot of inspiration from the Soviet-era recruitment posters of old to create some EVE-themed ones for Duty, which he explained comes from his "very early nullsec experience".
Ben Rush showed up with a bunch of recruitment posters themed around beavers for the Sorry In Advance corporation. Riffing on the stereotype of Canadians always apologising, these are advertisements for the "most adorable alliance in New Eden" and honestly, who could say no to these bearded, chubby-cheeked beavers?
There's also greybill with a stunning poster for Freedom Federation Day YC122, which is all about "celebrating the unity and independence of the Gallente Federation". It even has sponsors and a trademark warning at the bottom, making it much more authentic.
Finally, we have Heretical Coffee advertising Meme Fleet, which by their description, sounds like the perfect group to join for any EVE newcomers:
"The WHPD Public Service Community Meme Fleet departs every Sunday from near Jita in an undisclosed location until joining and passing the required fingerprinting. We are an alpha clone friendly, newbro friendly, nurturing environment to get a feel for PVP in a fleet with approximately 30 of your space friends.
"The WHPD does all of the work, we scout the wormholes, we find the content, we provide the ships, the fits, and we will get you set up in a sexy police skin, as supplies last, or a convict orange jumpsuit. Time is pinned to East Coast Time @ 1pm currently set at 1700 EVE."
