I'm in the midst upgrading my laptop. It's a mid 2012 Macbook Pro that's coming up to 12 years now. Around 8 years in I bought upgrades for RAM and harddrive but now the battery is needing to be replaced.
So the question is how often do you upgrade your tech? Are you a run it into the ground guy like me? Or do you upgrade every couple of years? What are the signs that you look for to indicate that you need an upgrade?
EDIT 4/21/2024 Some interesting discussion in the comments but the general consensus for at least PC and computers is once games no longer run as smooth or anymore is that is the time of upgrade. So generally once technology becomes more of a hindrance/ inadequate then it's time to upgrade. Other tech such as TVs don't need to be upgraded as much (might be a sign that TVs are less commonly used compared to other domestic tech), and phones are sliding towards a more infrequent upgrade from the annual releases to only when there is a big upgrade.
Thank you for all that replied - it is an interesting topic of discussion regarding technology. As an update on my laptop (if anyone followed because of it), a replacement battery came the other day and the operation is successful! Honestly this computer has far outlasted my expectations (8-10 years), I want to see whether I can push it to 15 years
