Allegedly, a new trailer for Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been ready for over a year, so I'm hoping that shows up, as unlikely as it may be!

Makster's avatar

On my wishlist but I think its a fool's dream now.

Then again Shenmue 3 was also a fool's dream so...

Geoff starts by acknowledging the industry's recent difficulties, but highlights the fact that eight of the top ten selling games on Steam this year so far are from indie studios as evidence of the industry shifting and evolving to cope with these changing pressures, and promises that this trend will be reflected in the upcoming trailers.

First announcement:

Lego Horizon Adventures, coming Holiday 2024.

Lego Aloy (from Horizon Zero Dawn). Lego action-adventure game featuring or starring Aloy, with Lego versions of Horizon-style dino bosses. Two-player action in mind with couch and online co-op, coming to PS5 but also launching day one on PC and Switch.

Boomer's avatar

I need that mecha-Lego-dinosaur set and MURRRAAAAY I'm holding you to that Lego build stream! 😄

MURRRAAAAY's avatar

Haha absolutely! You better otherwise I’ll end up never building it lol I only got it like a year ago haha

No More Room in Hell 2.

Early access coming this Halloween. It's a first-person zombie horror with a bit of shooting and lots of zombies by Torn Banner Studios (makers of Chivalry) - should have great-feeling melee combat with that pedigree. Also featuring permadeath, eight player co-op, and a massive playable map.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, presented by CuriosJoi, launching September 3rd for consoles and PC. A Quidditch game (obviously) with cutesy, Pixar-esque graphics.

CuffBust, coming "2025, IDK."

A massive competitive/co-op prison breakout party game in which you play as some kind of sugary translucent teddy-bear creatures with a disturbing capacity for violence. They are seen dropping pipe bombs into toilets to access the sewers, digging tunnels with spoons, and shooting rival teddy bears out of the sky with anti-aircraft guns. Made by a solo dev.

New Star Wars Outlaws trailer. Coming August 30. Geoff: "think I spotted Lando there!" Other shots show Jabba the Hutt, Jawas, getting strafed by a TIE Fighter while on a speeder bike, headshotting Stormtroopers in what is clearly an Imperial base.

Neva, a beautiful-looking indie, announced about a year ago, but now it's got a gameplay trailer. Emotionally charged action-adventure telling the story of Alba, a young woman bound to a curious wolf cub, together embarking on a perilous journey through a once-beautiful world as it slowly decays around them.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/I2cUHAlS8Nk?feature=oembed

Boomer's avatar

Neva really reminds me of Ori and Fez. It's absolutely stunning!

Holy crap I think this is Civilization 7

Edit: CIIIIIIIIIVVVVILIZAAAAATIONNNNN SEEEEVVEEEEENN

Ahem. Pardon me.

It is indeed Civ 7, as expected following the leak earlier this week. Sid Meier himself pops up confirming it's coming day-and-date to PC and console later this year. Full reveal "later this summer". This was really just a teaser trailer with lots of nice quotations and bronze statues evoking ages of history. There's probably something more to pull out from that but gotta get the next announcement.

SO hyped. My personal most-anticipated game for a VERY long time.

New trailer for Black Myth: WuKong and release date of August 20, which I think we already knew. Edit: we did. This trailer is a first look at the collector's and deluxe editions for the upcoming epic, which is coming to PS5 and PC. Pre-orders are open now.

Once Human, a post-apocalyptic open-world survival shooter, gets its release date trailer: it's coming to PC on July 09, 2024.

Looks pretty freaky. There's a walking house and various tentacley monster designs, some of which bring some gooey black dribble to the table. The concluding shot features four human player characters wearing backpacks and carrying guns as they charge an especially large tentacley thing with multiple heads. Here's the Steam page for more.

Street Fighter 6 gets a new, partially animated (like a cartoon, not digitally, but then there's a digitally animated bit too) trailer. Looks like a character reveal: M Bison, Terry, Elena, Mai are joining the fight in year two.

Tears of Metal.

Reveal trailer says it's a "roguelike co-op hack 'n' slash". There are combat sequences (hyper-stylised, lots of blood) but also some clips of what look like strategic and narrative sim layers. You play angry Scots fighting exaggerated monstrous enemies. Wishlists open now on Steam.

Delta Force: Hawk Ops, a tactical co-op extraction shooter, gets a new trailer. Global PC alpha test in July.

Trailer shows the briefing and planning of a mission, then we see the shooting gameplay: start by approaching a captured building stealthily, couple of sniper shots, then noisy assaut sneaking, sniper shooting, then assaulting.

The Hawk Ops trailer is then swiftly followed by another gameplay trailer for its premium campaign mode, entitled Black Hawk Down. This is a reimagining of the original Delta Force: Black Hawk Down game from 2003, and more than that, it's also fully licensed to recreate moments from the award-winning Ridley Scott movie (also Black Hawk Down).

Ok wow, there's a whole slew of new horror games from multiple studios following one after the other. They're all published by BlumHouse Games, a new publisher set up by the celebrated horror filmmaker Jason Blum, who also confirms the sequel to Five Nights At Freddys. The games are:

  • Crisol Theatre of Idols

  • Sleep Awake, from Eyes Out

  • Fear the Spotlight, from Cozy Game Pals (I assume that's an ironic studio name)

  • The Simulation, from PlayMeStudio

  • Project C

Check out the interview and showcase trailer:

Games are coming to PC and console and some of them are coming soon. Fear the Spotlight will be first, later this year.

World premiere trailer for a new Power Rangers game "with a retro feel", according to Geoff. And he's not wrong: it basically looks like Streets of Rage, though there are a few vehicular sections that remind me of arcade bike racing games.

It's called Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind.

World premiere trailer for Deer & Boy, a lovely, peaceful-looking indie adventure game that started as a solo dev's passion project during lockdown. It now has a small team and is being developed with funding support from the French government.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, the sequel to the authentic medieval open-world RPG from Polish devs Warhorse Studios that was a bit of a sensation a few years ago, gets a brand-new look trailer. 2024 release reconfirmed, wishlists open now.

Trailer descriptions sheds more light: "Share in the adventures of Henry as you explore the beautiful but unforgiving world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, a thrilling Action RPG set amid the chaos of a civil war in 15th Century Bohemia.

"Righteousness or vice: what path will you take? Will you try and save the world or punish it for its sins? Your actions shape Henry and the world around him in this ultimate open-world adventure."

Slitterhead, November 8, 2024.

New gameplay trailer showing combat with some seriously messed-up monsters that mutate in gross body-horror type ways out of otherwise normal-looking people, and a bit of superpowered platforming and body-hopping between apartment fire escapes.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/YD0ZRxzeRLs?feature=oembed

Killer Bean, early access summer 2024. A third-person roguelike shooter made by another solo dev (who has worked as an animator on movies including The Matrix Reloaded). Whimsical premise: looks like you play a talking... bean. "They made me who I am... and I will make them pay for it."

https://www.youtube.com/embed/4USyK7mIuY8?feature=oembed

Cairn is a 'survival climber' and a meditation on mountain climbing made by a small French studio called the Game Bakers. The devs Audrey Leprince and Emeric Thoa appear on stage to tell the personal story of its inspiration: Audrey's dad prepared an expedition to climb K2 when she was a teen, but half his team didn't come back, and since then she's always wondered what drives mountaineers to perservere in such dangerous conditions.

The reveal trailer follows. Stylised graphics show a mountaineer going about the business of climbing a challenging mountain: pinning ropes into the wall, taking a fall, getting frustrated, sleeping in a suspended tent and even doing press-ups in it.

Annapurna alert!

Wanderstop, coming in 2024 to Steam (wishlist) and PS5. Announcement trailer narrated by the protagonist: someone who professes to be a former fighter who yearns to be "out there" but is for some reason running a tea shop. Blue grass, purple trees, and manual chores to do to keep the shop running. Looks cosy. Seems like they're at peace... but clear hints that they're suppressing some kind of trauma.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/QF7EtyZdLMw?feature=oembed

Boomer's avatar

That hit harder than expected! 😧

Annapurna games always blow me away.

Unknown 9: Awakening gets a new story trailer. This is a third-person action-adventure starring Anya Chalotra (whom Witcher fans will recognise as Yennefer in the Netflix series) as protagonist Haroona, a tough kid from the rough streets of Calcutta who is born with the ability to enter a mysterious dimension known as the Fold. She "must master its powers to fight a secret society with a hostile agenda", so says the Steam page.

Looks cool. Due for release in fall 2024, wishlists open now.

Enotria: The Last Song, an upcoming soulslike, gets a cinematic trailer. Taking a novel approach compared with the doom and gloom of most in this genre, Enotria's Steam page says it is "is set in a beautiful sun-lit world inspired by Italian folklore, where the brightest sun casts the darkest shadow. Wear unique role-altering masks, face formidable foes and alter reality with the power of Ardore to unravel the secrets of Enotria."

Scheduled for release on September 18, 2024 for PS5 and PC (Steam and Epic). There's a demo which is available to play now on Steam.

The First Descendant, a really cool-looking sci-fi third-person looter shooter powered by Unreal Engine 5, gets a gorgeous new trailer and the release date reveal: July 2, 2024.

"Launching July 2 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, The First Descendant is a next generation third-person co-op action RPG shooter (looter shooter) featuring high-quality graphics developed using Unreal Engine 5. It presents fun strategic boss fights through 4-player co-op, various unique characters, exciting gunplay, and looting."

Innersloth, the developers behind Among Us, announce Outersloth, a fund to help other indie devs. The initiative is driven by a desire to put some of that sweet Among Us money to give other indie devs the boost they would've wanted and build a more sustainable industry after all the recent turmoil - wonderful to see.

There's a showcase trailer showing the first few of these projects:

Choose between over 50 different units and guide high-tech drones controlled by mercenary commanders known as Battle Aces onto the front lines in explosive large-scale battles.

After the reveal trailer, one of the devs appears on stage to tell us more. They promise "an RTS for everyone," whether or not you've played this genre before. They've smoothed the strategising by using unit cards and made a bunch of other tweaks to make this famously challenging genre more accessible.

Dark and Darker, the very hyped hardcore PvPvE dungeon crawler that was pulled from Steam after legal issues, gets a new gameplay trailer to announce that it's available now on Steam and Epic and you can play it for free! This was actually announced at the start of this week: there are "free-to-play accounts" that will let you experience some of the game without charge. Click here for more details over at the dev blog.

Gameplay shows more of what we already know: looks like a properly old-school first-person dungeon crawler, vaguely reminiscent of the old Might and Magic games or the early Elder Scrolls.

Party Animals. Cutesy trailer showing a corgi and a kitten getting up to all sorts of silly hijinks. The footage on the Steam page shows sticky limbs and lots of physics-based environmental interactions: think Gang Beasts with fur. Here's more:

"Fight your friends as puppies, kittens and other fuzzy creatures. Paw it out with your friends remotely, or huddle together for chaotic fun on the same screen. Interact with the world under our realistic physics engine."

There's a live-action trailer set in the chaotic offices of a company called M-Corp, the self-described "leader in creative accounting", where it looks like all sorts of things are going wrong. If you've been following the social accounts for EA's upcoming Skate, M-Corp will be familiar to you: they're doing some kind of social media takeover and, sure enough, it's a setup for a new Skate trailer.

"We're still working on it", we're assured, and the actual skating footage is said to be "pre-pre-alpha". Not a whole lot to glean from this but it's pretty good fun.

Phew. And we're out! I'm gonna go back over these posts and update with more detail and trailers as they become available. Hope this is/has been useful - which games are you most excited for?

Me: Civilization 7, Phantom Blade 0, First Descendant, Civilization 7, and probably a few of those nice, gentle-looking indies. Never really been my thing but they're looking more and more appealing to me these days.

Boomer's avatar

That show was absolutely packed! Stand out games for me are:

  • No More Room in Hell 2

  • Dune

  • CuffBust

  • Wanderstop

  • Power Rangers

  • Squad Busters

  • ...and the entire BlumHouse Games lineup!

CelestialFlea's avatar

Struggled to stay awake tbh most of it looked mid to meh (though I only watched the last hour or so but it doesn't look like I missed too much), Killer bean and Phantom Blade, the only ones that piqued my interest tbh.

Overall I think it was a pretty good showing, if not super exciting. When I looked over the rundown there was quite a lot I was interested in:

  • Civilization 7

  • MechaBreak

  • Fear the Spotlight

  • Power Rangers

  • Deer + Boy

  • Slitterhead

  • Killer Bean

  • Sonic x Shadow Generations

  • skate

  • Phantom Blade 0
