Pretty sure the Black Myth Wukong will take the GOTY prize. It is so well made, fantastic gameplay, fantastic Story and I don't need say anything about the visual!!

yan57436's avatar

I think Final Fantasy VII is a worthy competitor, but it won't beat wukong

JHenckes's avatar

I really hope Black Myth Wukong wins. The game is incredible in many ways, has been a benchmark for various mechanics and graphics and has been extremely praised by various websites and content creators. You could say that it's one of the few games in recent years that you can really tell is from the new generation! I'm rooting for it, it deserves it!

Sturmer's avatar

Do you mean 2024?

yan57436's avatar

The GOTY 2024 has already taken place, baldur's gate 3 has won!

Sturmer's avatar

BG3 is the game of the year 2023. Golden Joystick Awards 2023, and others.

The Game Awards 2023 - Wikipedia

Most awards (not just The Game Awards) typically consider nominees from the same year, so GOTY 2025 will include games released from 1st January 2025 onwards. However, sometimes games released very late in the year may qualify for the following year's awards if they miss the cut-off deadline for voting.

As for GOTY 2024, it's still too early to make any calls. The next three months are packed with strong releases—Assassin's Creed: Shadows, Path of Exile 2, Mario, Stalker 2, COD6, Dragon Age, Batman, and more. Even Enotria, with the right marketing, could trash Wukong.

Helldivers 2 was strong, and as a game it's great... but that PSN story spoiled their victory =(

yan57436's avatar

I see, in fact I made a mistake with the nomenclature.

As for future games, I believe they lack the strength to compete with the current ones, a possible name would be indiana jones. Of course, that's just my opinion

Sturmer's avatar

Do you mean Indiana Jones and the Great Circle? This one is a prime example of a game that will be evaluated on next year's awards, since its release date is Dec 9 on PC/Box and Q2-sh for PS5.

yan57436's avatar

That's exactly why I said “would” and not “will”, as well as saying that the strongest games were already on the market

CMDR Henckes's avatar

I think even Indiana Jones has a great chance to not be that great. Like Helldivers 2, just a fun game and nothing more. But I really hope it came out a masterpiece like the Indiana Jones movies!!

yan57436's avatar

I think they made the mistake of making it first person, we'll have Harrison Ford but it will be in first person (yes, I know there will be times when the camera changes, but the criticism is still valid). Even more so when we look at uncharted and tomb raider which are “indiana jones style” I believe it was a pattern that should be followed (then you would have to be very careful not to have anything innovative, which I believe should be the point of exploration of the whip). Let's wait and see, I'm very excited

CMDR Henckes's avatar

It's hard to believe those games can compete with games like Wukong , Final Fantasy or Elden Ring. They can be fun games but hardly will be great works to deserve a GOTY Award.

JHenckes's avatar

What's more, we know the risks of games based on famous IPs in other media, the vast majority of which go wrong and this is also due to the sale of rights to questionable companies and studios! I think this Indiana Jones game might escape this curse a little, but for me it's almost impossible for it to be one of the games of the year. Maybe it'll make a splash as a contender for best adventure game or best soundtrack, we'll see!

yan57436's avatar

Look at the Star Wars franchise in games, simply going through EA and Ubisoft, the games that have come out have been of good quality, but very questionable in terms of their state at launch and some games even with abusive practices

Makster's avatar

Are we counting DLC as part of GOTY? How about ports like Paper Mario TYD - isn't that a GameCube Game? - it'll be pretty funny to see a 2004 game win for 205

I'm surprised Stella Blade isn't on the list considering the amount of attention that game got!

yan57436's avatar

I think the elden ring dlc is unlike anything we've seen before, being on the level of the witcher dlc, but I agree that it can't be judged as a game, and mario is still a new game haha, even if it's from something we've already seen (as we saw in the amazing new resident evil 4). I don't think Stella Blade is strong enough to stand between wukong and final fantasy, but it should definitely be remembered

Sturmer's avatar

Yup, Stellar Blade is in a strong position too! I do not like GOTY platform-locked titles, but we had God OF War, The Last of Us Part II, Zelda BOTW and more.

But check out this list - 2024 video game release schedule | Eurogamer.net
so many candidates, judging by Gamescom and PAX lines for hands-on - POI2 and Assasin have a good chance to win too, surprisingly, Wukong's stand this year was not too crowded like in 2023.

JHenckes's avatar

For me, Stellar blade is just a game that's going to be successful... In rule 34

CMDR Henckes's avatar

That game is really generic, it is even hard to heard about the game nowadays. I thinks it was a really momentous hype, and that hype happen just because the hiper sexualization of the protagonist. Its sad that the devs and companies still have to do this for their games to have a minimal success.

Don't even tell, that game is just the the remaining of an outdated industry. A industry that is in its final days finally.

Dragon Age! People need more quality RPGs

yan57436's avatar

I've played the old Dragon Ages and I've seen that the visual identity has changed a lot in this new game. I'll definitely give it a go!

Astrobot might grab all the critics’ votes this year!

yan57436's avatar

I didn't believe in Astro bot's potential, I thought it would be too simple, but the reviews are really captivating me. When it's cheaper, I'll definitely play it

Thomas's avatar

My guess is definitely Astro Bot. It's the highest rated game on Metacritic, and the only one that doesn't really have anything working against it. It's had no big controversies, it's not DLC, it's AAA, it's not a remake, it's not a niche genre. I haven't played it yet but it seems like everyone that has had a great time with it.

yan57436's avatar

The fact that it's a game that caters for all audiences may in fact be a factor, since children to adults can play it without too much difficulty

Limal's avatar

Mario is in trouble :)

Lanah Tyra's avatar

I'm biased but I'll still say FFVII Rebirth. Remake was already amazing, but Rebirth just outdid it in every possible way. Cinematics and graphics are stunning, the new game mechanics of synergy abilities gives so much variation to fights and I think the dynamic difficulty does a really good job of adjust the combat to be a little challenging but not overwhelming. I usually play on easy mode as I want to focus on the story, but I swapped to dynamic because monsters were dying too quickly on easy XD

yan57436's avatar

It's interesting to see someone who focuses on the story, 99% of the time I play games focused on the gameplay, so much so that I often play listening to music or even a podcast and we still enjoy games, each in their own way hahaha

Lanah Tyra's avatar

I used to listen to music when I played Lineage 2, as that was a lot of grinding and pvp late into the night, even though I loved the music of the game some rock and metal fitted better.

RPGs I play for the story, I do a lot of side quests as well to get as much of the lore as I can. I focus on combat in certain parts, like the Chronolith trials in XVI or the Combat Simulator in Remake and Rebirth. I love that you can do these in your own time, and I often go back to them to get a better score.

In FFXIV I thought I would be listening to playlists more, but the fights actually have cues for mechanics in the music, so even when I raid I can't imagine not having the fight music on.

It's interesting that even an RPG can be played focusing on gameplay and be enjoyable while you listen to something else. Thanks for sharing this!
