Can cheating ever be justified?
I'm going to use a recent game I've been playing as an example, Test Drive Unlimited - Solar Crown. An always online, multiplayer racing game. As it's recently faced issues with cheaters setting ridiculous times in race leaderboards, even freezing AI at the start of races on the grid but I'm going to talk about the kind of cheats that are arguably less harmful, money cheats.
In this example that's caused a lot of controversy within the TDU community you can earn up to a maximum of 100k in cash up to 10x a day using a system called FRIM, which is basically a multiplier for things like driving on the wrong side, drifting, near misses, high speed etc. Normally it would take 10-15 minutes for each cash in.
But this 'trainer' cheat allows players to skip this process at the touch of a button just by drifting once. But I got into an argument with someone on YouTube who claimed that this was money that you would be getting anyway and just sped up the process and that it doesn't harm anyone. Trying to justify that people don't have time to grind for money with broken AI and poor optimization etc etc. imho that's a you problem.
Personally I'm sick of racing games being easy for the sake of those who 'don't have time', I don't mind a challenge, I don't mind a grind if the end-goal is worth the time investment. Personally I think cheats like this ARE harmful as it not only destroys that sense of achievement and takes away any challenge, but it also screws with the economy/ecosystem. As players are getting in minutes what others would have to put effort in to grind for and the result is players having cars and maxed out upgrades quicker than others.
So what do you guys think? Do you think cheats can ever be justified in an online game as an accessibility kind of thing? Or maybe other reasons? If so, why? Or do you think like me; that it's an incredibly selfish and toxic mindset to maintain that just because you're busy or you can't be bothered grinding, that it gives you the right to skip tasks?
Let's discuss!
