When a musical artist first blows up, it's usually because they perfected a certain style at the exact moment the world was ready for it. A band can run hot for two, three, even four albums like this, but times change, and unless artists change with them they can be left behind, winning no new fans beyond their loyalist base.
Reinventing one's music is not easy, though, which is why artists who've stayed current across decades are exceedingly rare. For this bounty we're discussing the few who've pulled it off.
Tell us about a musical artist who has transformed their musical style at least once - the more radically, the better - and done so successfully. Which albums marked the transition? What's the difference in the music before and after? Why did it succeed where so many others failed?
We're looking for lengthy, thoughtful answers to this one, in written or video form. The best ten submissions get $3 apiece!
