How do PC players and builders keep up with all the latest graphics cards and their relative usability? I see numbers like 5600 and RTX and I have no idea what people are talking about.

Sturmer's avatar

Understanding graphics cards can be straightforward. Typically, 2-3 generations are relevant at any time, each with a clear grading system that translates to budget tiers and performance levels.

Take Nvidia's RTX series, often referred to as "greens" due to their logo. The model numbers indicate the generation and performance tier. The first digit is the generation, and the third digit represents the tier. Sometimes you'll see "ti" or "s" (super), indicating a boosted version with performance halfway to the next tier.

For example:

  • RTX 2060: 2nd gen

  • RTX 3060: 3rd gen

  • RTX 4060: 4th gen

Performance tiers:

  • 4050: Entry level

  • 4060: Entry level

  • 4060ti: Mid level (20-30% better than non-ti)

  • 4070: Mid level

  • 4070ti: Mid level

  • 4080: High level

  • 4080 S: High level (3-5% better than non-s)

  • 4090: Top level

This hierarchy remains consistent across generations. "OC" means factory overclocked for 2-5% better performance. Laptop versions of these cards use less power and perform about 30% lower than their desktop counterparts. So a laptop 4070 is equal to PC 4060, or 3070ti or 2080 super =) See the pattern? )

AMD "red" cards follow a similar structure with their own naming conventions.

For detailed comparisons, check websites like UserBenchmark: Nvidia RTX 4060 vs 4060-Ti

I'm a teacher and am wondering if there is an AI program that can create worksheets for my students - ideally creating them with good formatting with space for responses and having them downloadable as PDFs.

I want to be able to write 'create a worksheet with 20 maths problems involving 2 digit addition' and have the AI spit something out.

Sturmer's avatar

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, can you share one sample please? as excel (editable) format

What is the threshold where an AI could be argued to have human rights?

Is it a level of intelligence? A test which can be given a-la Blade Runner? Would there need to be some sort of biological or just physical component, such as a humanoid body/face, etc.

Rixx Javix's avatar

A great place to start answering that question is on the Wikipedia page for the Turing Test - lots of links and additional references that you could spend hours reading up on

I believe Asimov tried to answer this with this works and it lead to the robot wars we haven seen in I, Robot.

Bro AMD is GOATED on their CPU's Lineup, why people still hate them? like if we include on stability stats AMD is MUCH stable than Intel Nowdays???

anyways AMD CPU >>>

Limal's avatar

I have never heard anyone actually hate them or hate CPUs in general, the are most reliable part of the computers and works for decades. You can find plenty of i5 or i7 1-4th gen, meanwhile you cant find a motherboards for thwir sockets.

It's just marketing and market share (87 vs 12%) equals trust and habit.

Lanah Tyra's avatar

Ever since I built my first PC I always had AMD. When I looked for gaming laptops one of my criteria was for it to have AMD CPU.

T

My question is how long is a computers life ?

Sturmer's avatar

As long as there is a power source and proper maintenance to avoid irreversible damage.

mar1gold 's avatar

Stupid question but...

HOW DOES BLUETOOTH ACTUALLY WORK? this has baffled me for so long

Sturmer's avatar

Same as human eyes - thanks to electromagnetic radiation a.k.a. radio waves

How do sleep-tracking apps work without wearable devices? For example, Pokémon Sleep.

Even smartwatches, with accelerometers and constant heart rate monitoring, struggle to precisely measure sleep states. How can just a microphone do the job?

Horror and Cats's avatar

Mimikyu watches you sleep.

All. Night.

this is fine, this is fine, this is fine

What will be the next step in CPU cooling?

I know people are overclocking chips with liquid nitrogen, but I'm looking for a more reasonable response. Will air coolers continue to just get better and better? Will AIOs ditch water pumps entirely? Or is there something else on the horizon?

TheGreatestBanana12's avatar

Which is better Intel or AMD?

Sturmer's avatar

To answer this question you need to provide information 'better for what'?

JB

Everyone knows the Internet there, but is there any way to work out what it's actual physical matter would be/how much it weighs etc? Hope that's not a stupid question but something can't exist without an actual physical presence surely?!

Also can anyone recommend a good gaming monitor for my PS5 for around £250? Needs to be 27" or more and at least 1440p ideally!

Lanah Tyra's avatar

Are you talking about the infrastructure like the servers and cables or the content on the Internet?

JB

The Internet content itself, if that makes sense?

Lanah Tyra's avatar

Yeah the question makes sense! Not sure how to answer it though. The only way would be to make a statistics about how much all the data would be printed out on paper and what would be the weight of that. Might be an interesting question to ask from an AI. Would definitely give them something to calculate :D

Horror and Cats's avatar

That was exactly what I thought. How many single sided pages of 12 point, single spaced Times New Roman pages would it take to print the internet, then how much would that weigh lol.

Only problem is video/image/sound. Would we print out the binary it's comprised of?

Lanah Tyra's avatar

Oh yeah good point! Time for CD and DVD burning then, throw them on the top of the to be measured pile :D

Horror and Cats's avatar

I have two of these monitors and play my PS5 on one of them. BIG fan of it

Not understanding people saying the 20 rtx series is better than the 40 because looking at the specs the 40 series is a lot better? Someone please explain.

Horror and Cats's avatar

People are saying that? I have a RTX 2080 and a RTX 4070 and the 4070 is like, 5 years newer and six times more powerful lol

Lanah Tyra's avatar

Where did digitalisation go wrong that many places now have a mix of paper and digital process which just makes things even more complicated? And I'm not talking about the option to do things on paper or online, but having to use a mix of both. Like they send you a poorly edited Word document to fill it out online (which you can't, because poor editing... have they not heard of editable PDF?) print out, sign it, scan it, send it back in email for someone on the other side having to print it out, file it, while also keeping countless digital copies of it.

And this was already a problem in the early 90s and it just got worse since then...

Will technology be able to extrack people's memories in the future ?

Kane Carnifex's avatar

Yes, pleas.

There are plenty of movies which show what could go wrong.
But they are fiction :P

If you could recommend one thing thing to us less unfortunate tech savy humans. For a piece of tech that should have in the home. What would you recommend?

Are we looking to see Terminator rolling through with AI? What should be be aware of moving forward over the next 20 years?

Kane Carnifex's avatar

When does it stop with all these Tech Buzzwords for stuff which doesn´t work how they promise the normal people?

Can we have a Science Standard?!

I’ve recently bought a capture card to make video game play throughs and I’m just wondering if anyone has tips and tricks on how best to use them to record. How do you start doing this? How do they work and the best way to go about it? What can go wrong? What to avoid?

Horror and Cats's avatar

I got an Elgato external capture card to get console footage on my PC. For recorded let's plays people tend to want smoothness over resolution.

When I first started I didn't realize that the "out of the box" setting was 4K at 30FPS, but going into the "custom" resolution in OBS let me change it to 1920x1080 at 60FPS which is barely noticeable in resolution, but immensely noticeable in smoothness.

Another thing to consider is that no matter the capture card, there is always just a TINY bit of delay, so unless you want a massive editing headache, don't record both audio feeds (game and mic) to one thing and both video feeds (game and camera) to another, because you'll have to pick which one's timing is off. Probably a niche concern but it's happened to me lol.

My question is, do you think will ever represented with a consult that performs backward capability properly?

So I mean in the sense of a PlayStation 6 or a PlayStation 7 being able to play PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 2 games based off the discs that’s inserted in.

I feel like when it came to the PS5 I personally felt like I was fed a lot of misleading claims, so I genuinely thought you would be able to insert a PS3 game in there and it would play properly. And obviously that’s not the case and when it comes to playing discs that you can play both on the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 you need to make sure that you get the very specific thick version that works on both.

The workaround that I’ve got at the moment, which I’m very lucky to have, is playing games on my steam deck where it gives me the ability to play PlayStation 3 that haven’t yet had the opportunity to be remastered for various reasons such as licensing et cetera.

What do you think of AI

Do you think it really will become a danger to us? Or do you think AI will simply be a tool for us to use?

As one lady put it in an article, "I don't want AI making paintings and coming up with new tech, I want to do that whilst AI does my dishes and laundry, giving me free time to pursue my goals"

What is your opinion on AI tech?

Sturmer's avatar

Why aren't we moving towards cleaner and potentially limitless energy technologies like nuclear fusion or the proven clean energy of nuclear fission in power plants? Instead of building more nuclear power plants, we're closing old ones and continuing to burn coal and gas.

Lanah Tyra's avatar

I guess the answer to that would be someone high up is still profiting from all the oil and other businesses.

There's already Elon Musk's Neuralink. As more of those implants/technologies advance, How far until it has considerably change our humanity? At which point will we become more machine than human?
