So Smite 2... Until now its going in a good way, of course with ups and downs like any game in alpha and beta would have.

The Alpha of Smite 2 already looks like a finished game, and maybe the name alpha refers to test phase only, and you can see that by the performance, the visuals and of course the gameplay. It do better everything compared to the predecessor. Remember if there are long wait time to find matches or bad balancing it reflects only the low player base yet since it wasn't fully released and this part can be and must be review the the games releases.

The first point I want to call out about this game is the system of functions for each gods, carry, support, solo, mid and jungle looks like any other MOBA that we know around there, but for me in Smite 2 it is a little hard to you have flexibility and that brings Pros and Cons, the god will have specific function and every team will know what to expect the actions from the players, this will be very glad for casual players like me, but it isn't the best thing in competitions but it will always be easy to balance what it is good for professional competitions too. So looking in the balance it is a good point, maybe could be revised, specially for supports that some times they have difficult to defend them selves because of their low attack and some times low speed.

For the number of gods still very low, and this is because to keep the balancing planing easy but this make the game very monotonous, now it is changing with the new arrivals but for the first months the game got boring real fast. In my opinion the release of new gods should be a little frequent, but not too frequent to give us bad balancing, if this is possible it would be very welcomed.

The conquest mode, compared from what it was in the first seasons of smite 1 is fantastic, it is a really improvement for jungle players and give us more exiting matches, where both teams must have a good strategy while travelling in the map and when each play must leve their lane to help another that is now a little distant. The map helps the game to be more engaging and fun and gives complexity that is always welcomed, form me this is the best point of the game so far.

But until now the game is evolving in a great way, but even without comparing with the first game, we have a long way to walk and maybe it should be a little faster, maybe it will mess a little with balancing but it will bring more player base, specially from the first game, to the Smite 2, and this will have good points, and maybe even help in the balancing of the gods, towers and minions, since the game will have more data to analyse and better overview of the meta gameplay.

Smite 2 is in a really good spot right now!

The Pro's:

  • Performance!
Performance is so much better than it was in the first few months of the closed alpha for Smite 2. I have much more stable FPS and I can stream on twitch while playing. I couldn't before, which was a reason for not switching to Smite 2.

  • Mechanics

The mechanics are so fun right now, it's like Smite 1 but better. I love the +1 changes to the gods, and I absolutely adore the new gods, Hecate and Mordred. I think Hecate has one of the best kits in smite history

  • Items

The new Item system is both fun and easy to understand, in my opinion. It brings more variety to builds. And I love the active items. I hope we see more interesting active items in the future

The Cons

  • Performance could be better

    • Like I said, the performance is miles ahead of what it was in Smite 2's first few months, but it could run better. Most games, I'm able to stream to both twitch and tiktok while playing the game on normal quality without lag. I can't do that just yet with smite 2. And for people who have lower end PC's, they're at more of a disadvantage.

  • No text chat

    • It's hard to interact with the team the way i want to because there's no text chat. Voice chat is great, but a lot of people have the loudest, crunchiest microphones, and don't know how to use push to talk. I think open mic should never ever be allowed in video games. We NEED push to talk because these ppl be watching family guy while we're trying to listen for call outs and stuff.

  • Low player base

The low player base that we have in Smite 1 and 2 right now, considering the playerbase is currently split, makes for bad matchmaking in both games. It's not very equal

Overall, I reccomend Smite 2, especially since they are giving away access codes via Twitch right now. It's essentially free to play, and I think more people should try it out, especially if you're a smite super fan

SMITE 2 if it continues on this path could be the comeback story of a century.

We all know the game was rough when it initially launched into the closed alpha weekend tests. It looked very 'default UE5'. The str/int system was less refined, there were a lot of 'gameplay feels' issues, the God roster was small and poorly chosen, among many other issues.

But in a few short months since then, the game has gotten 10x better with more Gods and better choices of Gods, a huge visual environment overhaul, the Ascension Pass system, 'gameplay feel' has seen massive improvements and there's plenty more on the horizon for the game as we approach January and the 50 gods target the devs have set for then.

Already the game is far more interesting than its predecessor, SMITE 1, and has a much more solid foundation both in terms of being built on a much more modern engine with a fresh code-base but also in the core mechanics of how the game works. Str vs Int and hybrid builds are super interesting, active items make builds more varied and gameplay more fun, the God changes that make them more dynamic have been mostly good.

So much has been achieved in just a few months since the initial alpha launched and if the game keeps improving at this pace, it will surpass SMITE 1 in every way probably less than a year from now and I think the future potential of the game if the devs can keep hitting with patches like they have been could be absolutely massive.

HEAVY on the "Default UE5" feel. IMO, the way they quickly turned around the art style to make it look more unique instead of just a game inside of unreal engine 5 should be emphasized and celebrated. The art team had to have been cooking. It was one of my biggest gripes, and they fixed it in a pretty good way, very quickly.

We have games like Predecessor who are kind of stuck in this UE5 art style, and it just doesn't feel like it has much personality because of that.

Smite 2 was given a short leash. Among layoffs, the ending of a mismanaged pro scene, and overall sentiment being in the toilet (see various doom and gloom videos about Smite 2); I would say a lot of that initial negativity is gone.

Today Smite 2 is remarkably different from where it was 2 months ago during CA1 week. As I look back at my older videos I remember the pain that were the early days. Odd build orders, scaling issues, straight up broken mechanics... all signs of a game in Closed Alpha. But we the community have been giving what Hi-Rez needed to bring the game to today... feedback.

Sometimes it feels like every time 1 bug is fixed 2, more spawn. (See the Steam page for all the hotfixes that happen after patch drops). Nevertheless, the game is WAY better than the start. Objectives have been tuned to not be overpowered to gain and underpowered to fight. The days of sub 20-minute ancient furies due to 3:30 Gold fury being killable by 3 people are over. There's less of a "oh this thing is broken" and now it's moving closer to a "skill issue" you're in your bracket kinda problem. But that will be fixed with time. As the player base hopefully grows in beta to full release, we'll have a bigger pool of players to grow the game in skill.

I'm gonna skip graphics. UE5 is awesome and I don't think we need to go over that.

The change where you can scale via Strength/Intelligence/Protections is the best change that could've been made and it fits well with giving players more options to build and more playstyles to experiment with. I'm glad you can build more items and synergize into a variety of effective builds. You really can't say this build is bad or "this person is trolling" as obviously as you would in Smite Classic.

The big improvement for me is the ability to counter in Smite 2. I'm hoping that as the game ages and more items come online there's a counter to every mechanic in the game so it really becomes a rock paper scissors style counterplay where having to cover all bases or anything in between is a viable option. Make the game so that players have to adapt to not just the playstyles of the opposing team but also little actives and items that make a team think differently about the game. The ones currently in the game are great but I'd like to see more.

Overall I think Smite 2 is a long way ahead of where Smite Classic was in the same lifespan of the game. If you haven't bought this game to be in the CA, you should I think this will be a far better and more fun/entertaining MOBA than its competitors. I've tried others and this one actually feels right and is downright enjoyable. Even with the problems it had early, I was willing to stick it out and I'm glad I did. Smite 2 is on the way to being a really, really good MOBA and a game you should have in your library.

Strengths:

  • Graphics and Engine Upgrades: Visually, SMITE 2 feels like a significant upgrade. Improved textures, smoother animations, and refined effects make the game look modern and immersive while preserving the mythological atmosphere. In my opinion, I think it's a big upgrade over Smite 1

  • Enhanced Mechanics: Adjustments in gameplay mechanics and updated abilities make combat more dynamic. Many gods feel fresh yet familiar, keeping the core experience while introducing exciting twists.

Problems:

  • Balancing Issues: Some gods seem overtuned, especially with new abilities that dominate certain lanes. Balance refinement will be crucial as more players join.

  • Server Stability: Lag and disconnects still interrupt gameplay. With player feedback, optimizations will be essential. In my case, I feel some lag compared to Smite 1.

Wish List for Full Release:

  • More Game Modes and Maps: Classic modes with refreshed maps would offer variety.

  • Progression System Updates: Enhanced rewards and a more personalized leveling system could deepen player engagement.

  • CrossPlay: CrossPlay is something that I find fundamental in Smite. There are some servers with few players and, especially in ranked, it is difficult to find a match. With crossplay I believe they could solve this problem.

Overall, SMITE 2 looks promising, especially for fans of the original game seeking both nostalgia and novelty. Balancing and server stability should be priorities before the official release, but the Alpha shows strong potential.

So far, I think Smite 2 is on the right track. Since the very first alpha test, there have been many improvements in the right direction. I'll start my review with things that I think Smite 2 does better.

First off, I think the improvements to the god's kits are great. They are porting a lot of gods from Smite 1 who's kits are outdated. When these gods were first released they were great. However, now with newer and more complicated gods to compete with, these older gods struggle. The Smite 2 team has done a great job updating these god's kits while maintaining their identity. These gods still feel like the gods you know and love, but a bit easier to play. I also find that the model updates they have made have been excellent. I like what they did with Nemesis. She still looks like Nemesis, but they fixed her design to make more sense than it did before (fishnets were not the choice in retrospect).

I think the new building system is much better than before. While more complicated at first glance, it is easy to pick up and offers more flexibility than Smite 1. You can still choose to stick to simple builds or even use the same builds you'd use in Smite 1. However, now you have more options for build pathways, allowing you to personalize your builds further. Especially for my mains, I like figuring out my builds for gods, so it's nice for that to be a bit easier now. The new scaling system is also excellent for the same reasons. You get a lot more options that weren't available before.

The last two good things I want to touch on is the changes to the conquest map and graphics. I think the new conquest map looks great and I like the new objectives. My only complaint is that there is no green buff for support and red buff is too far from mid. I think that support deserves to have a buff of its own. Support is already a role that many people don't like and not giving the role a buff is like adding insult to injury.

Also, the new graphics look great. A lot of the graphics for the abilities are a lot clearer than the ones in Smite 1, both the ability icons and the way hitboxes are shown before you channel an ability look a lot cleaner.

There's really only two things I don't like about Smite 2 currently: the way damage feels and matchmaking.

The way damage and defense feel is a bit off from Smite 1. For starters, as a tank, in the late game you don't feel tanky. Normally if I engage in a fight and want to back out safely, as long as I keep my dash up, I can do so easily in Smite 1. In Smite 2 however, I get deleted within a handful of seconds. While I agree that squishies should die relatively fast to teach them good positioning, as a tank player it's hard for me to dive the enemy team if I get deleted before my team can follow up. Along with that, I find everyone does a lot more damage than they do in Smite 1. Tanks in general take chunks of squishies' health while being comparatively hard to kill. When I play solo, if I play right, I can 2v1 into squishies and win by having similar damage output and being just a tad tankier than they are. I think the way damage and defense feel should be brought back to match Smite 1's a bit more.

This is just a minor criticism in comparison, but matchmaking is a bit rough. I regularly get teammates who don't understand how the game works, while the enemy team is competent. It's rough because I'll be doing fine, but my team isn't and I can't do enough to help them. While I know part of this is due to the lower player base since it's an alpha, I think matchmaking has something to do with this. I say this because I had better luck with matchmaking when there was none at all in earlier tests.

Overall, I think the game is in the right direction. Something I would like to see that I don't believe is in the plans to come is win/loss screens for the gods and death animations. I remember the dev team saying that they didn't want to bring the win/loss screens back since people didn't look at them, but I think they add a lot of character to the gods. Sure you get used to them over time, but when you see one you haven't seen before, they are very entertaining and add more soul to the game. Also, I find that the current explosion they use for deaths is visually harder for me to track. It's easier for me to tell that I've died when I see the animation and it adds character to the game. But those are just two nitpicks.

I am really enjoying Smite 2, I haven’t played Smite 1 since it was announced and I feel smite 2 since CA4 has been in a good enough spot that I am coming home and playing it every day. Except when my internet is being terrible then it’s extremely rough and I have to find anything else to do. They just added Khepri Nemesis and izanami into the game and I’ve been having a blast. Can’t wait to see what changes they make to the new gods coming up! I think the F2P release will really bring back a decent chunk of the player base. They can’t slow down too much with the gods after tho. If they slow down too much it’s going to fall off quickly, at least 1 god every 2 weeks. I know it’s not exactly game related but their titan talks have been enjoyable and insightful.

Hey dented, thanks for entering this bounty. In order to reward you however, we're looking for a little more detail about the current state of SMITE 2, rather than talking about the future. Could you edit your submission to expand a little on some of those thoughts? Here are a few things you could consider when adding to it:

  • Do you feel the game is well balanced?

  • What are your thoughts on some of the minor kit redesigns and ability changes?

  • How does the new player experience fare?

  • Are there enough modes and variety?

  • How does it compare to SMITE 1?

Personally, I loved how Smite 2 works and how the effects of the characters are seen with their abilities, etc. What I must accept is that the store is a bit confusing, I spend a lot of time searching and seeing the items in the base ( logical because everything is new) and I have seen some small errors like:

1-In the settings, when you deactivate the vibration and apply the changes, it does not really deactivate and continues to vibrate within the game.

2-I did not receive the daily rewards that give "diamonds" and when I received some the next day I had 0 diamonds again despite going on day 4 of the reward.

So far that's the only thing I've noticed in smite 2.

In smite 1 I liked how items were purchased that did not evolve by combining several purchases. The only errors in smite 1 are:

1-In each update they always take away about 10 voice packs and make me have to buy them again and when another update comes out they take them away again, it's an endless cycle.

2-In Assault when you get certain gods like "Fafnir, Gilgamesh" they no longer let you change gods because the "change" option is blocked. I understand that this happens with healers, but with tanks they also gasp even if they are not "healers."

They go very well with everything, good luck smite team!

Smite 2 Summary:

Positive Points: Performance has improved a lot since the closed alpha, with much more normalized fps, which is a very important point for the game. The gameplay is more fun and immersive, with improvements in relation to Smite 1, as you stay more entertained, such as changes in the gods and new characters. The new system is much easier to understand compared to the old one and brings more variety in the different builds, especially with active items that can be used in a very simple way. Visually, Smite 2 has evolved a lot, with improved textures, animations and fluidity, maintaining a mythological atmosphere that involves the entire game and creates a greater tradition for the player, personally I think it is much more than that of Smite 1. The combat dynamics have been reformulated to be more interesting and much more fun, it is almost a majority opinion, I include myself.

Negative points: Although it has evolved in many aspects, there is still room for more optimizations and basic improvements, especially for players with low-performance PCs. The lack of text chat makes it difficult to communicate with the team, as it forces the player to say things without details and other problems that this brings, and the voice chat is almost always bad. The division between Smite 1 and 2 results in matchmaking problems, with games with strange pairings. Some gods are very broken, especially with new abilities that focus on certain routes of the game. Balance will be crucial for a healthier game. Lag and occasional disconnections are still annoying.

Smite 2 is on a good path, competing head-to-head and surpassing Smite 1 in several aspects, such as performance, mechanics and graphics. Despite the problems with balance, stability and player base, the game has a great future for Smite lovers and offers a more fun and refined experience.

When i first started playing Smite 2 it didnt really feel like Smite at all,it felt not good to play and honestly the lack of gods really put me off. Now i think Smite 2 is in a exclent spot and should continue to just do great,i do fear that some of the player base maybe be at a point of no return already. The game is well balanced now and has new items which is always good for a game like a MOBA,the fps is also better considering the perfomance problems we had at the start. Overall i do think Smite 2 is doing alot better than before in just a few months, for an Alpha the game is quickly moving foward and beginning to feel more interesting than Smite 1. I just hope the devs continue to listen to the fans and add the most popular gods to the game.
